October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of workers with disabilities and to reaffirm our commitment to building inclusive workplaces that reflect the full diversity of our communities.
The Origins of NDEAM
NDEAM traces its roots back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week of October each year as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1988, the observance was expanded to the entire month and renamed to reflect the full spectrum of disabilities and the importance of equitable employment.
At BWB&O, we believe that true innovation and progress come from diverse perspectives, including the voices and talents of people with disabilities. This month, we recognize not only the individuals within our organization but also honor trailblazers who have helped break barriers and change perceptions.
Spotlight: Stephen Hawking
World-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 21 and was given only a few years to live. He went on to become one of the most brilliant minds in science, authoring groundbreaking work in cosmology, publishing best-selling books like A Brief History of Time, and inspiring generations through his intellect, perseverance, and public presence.
Hawking once said, “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”
His legacy reminds us that disability does not define potential, and that accessibility and inclusion in education, employment, and innovation are essential to human progress.
Let’s use this month to celebrate, learn, and continue building workplaces where everyone can thrive.
