If your immune system is weakened because of a health condition or medical treatment, your body can struggle to fight diseases like COVID-19.

Reduce your risk of getting seriously ill or hospitalised by having the COVID-19 spring vaccination when you’re invited.

Dr James Bolt, a consultant specialising in movement disorders at Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, has become the first doctor in Wales to offer Produodopa a medication to help treat patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease, which involves a decline in dopamine levels. Dopamine is produced mainly in the brain and it helps with movement, memory, mood and control of organ functions like the gut.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease have lower levels of Dopamine and present with symptoms including tremor, shuffling gait, stiffness of limbs, and mask like facial expression. However, they may have had many other features of the disease before they present with these symptoms (such sleep disturbances or problems with their bowels).

Traditionally, Parkinson’s disease has been treated with oral dopamine. However, the dose has to be increased as their body produces less dopamine. Large doses of dopamine given orally can cause issues with other movements (called dyskinesias) which can be difficult for the patient.

Produodopa is a medication for advanced Parkinson’s Disease that is administered via a needle under the skin using a special pump. The pump delivers a small amount of the medication each hour which is gradually absorbed into the bloodstream. The pump is easy to programme and to use. It works 24 hours a day, meaning that the patient has a more consistent level of dopamine in their body throughout both the day and night.

Produodopa simplifies treatment for patients with advanced Parkinsons disease. It helps not only their motor symptoms (tremor, slowness, stiffness and dyskinesias), but has also been effective in improving their non-motor symptoms (sleep; bowel function, mood etc.). Overall. It has been shown in initial trials to improve the patients’ quality of life.

Welcome to the world, Nova, here with proud big brother Kobi. 💙

Mum and Dad are full of thanks for the staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital.

“I went in to be induced as baby was measuring big and with carrying extra fluid we just wanted her here.

From the minute we stepped inside all the midwifes were absolutely amazing, kind, caring, funny even when I was feeling deflated. Going into the unknown is scary but I felt at ease every single day in was there.

The midwife Claire who helped in the delivery room we can’t thank you enough, and every single midwife who was working, especially the night, you really are in our hearts forever.”

Sharing some love for our Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. 💙

“I would like to thank the staff at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda MIU for their amazing care and the way they work. From the moment I got there, to triage, x-ray of my ankle, and to the review and after care. You guys are reassuring, caring and efficient. I believe I was leaving with my moon boot within 45 minutes of arriving.

I am so grateful to every single one of you guys. Bless you all.

Thank the Lord for you and for our wonderful NHS. 🙏”

Coming into the Royal Glamorgan Hospital? Please bring your medicines with you.

Over the next few weeks, the Pharmacy team at Royal Glamorgan Hospital will be installing a new dispensing robot. While our new dispensing robot will help support safer, smoother patient care, it does mean there may be some temporary delays to providing medicines during the installation period.

You can help us by bringing all the medicines you take at home when you come into hospital for a planned appointment or admission.

This includes:
• Prescription medicines
• Inhalers, creams, eye drops
• Insulin and injectable medicines
• Tablets, capsules and liquids
• Over-the-counter medicines (e.g. pain relief)
• Vitamins or herbal supplements

Bringing your medicines helps us:
✅ Avoid delays - we won’t need to spend time contacting your GP or pharmacy to confirm your medicines.
✅ Make sure your treatment is accurate - our doctors and pharmacists can quickly check exactly what you take and the right doses.
✅ Reduce medicine waste - if you already have your medicines with you, we won’t need to supply extra packs unnecessarily.
✅ Save NHS resources – reducing waste means we can use resources where they’re needed most.
✅ Keep you safe during your stay - it reduces the risk of errors and ensures we continue the right treatment while you’re in hospital.

We’ll check and store your medicines safely, they may be used for your treatment in hospital if appropriate, and they’ll be returned when you go home.

If you forget or come in as an emergency – don’t worry, we’ll still look after you.

But if your visit is planned, please remember to pack your medicines.

Thank you for helping us manage this change.

Wondering how to get the quickest and best care for your injury?

Here's Nichola, one of our Lead Emergency Nurse Practitioners at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda Minor Injury Unit, to explain if our Minor Injury Unit (MIU) is the right place for you, including what injuries they treat, opening times, and staff you might meet in the unit.

❗You should not attend an MIU if you have a major medical problem such as a suspected heart attack, chest pain, stroke, or severe injuries. To do this is extremely dangerous as the unit has no doctors and cannot treat you. For all serious illness and injuries, you must go to an emergency department.
