How we feel about NDIS support at AYWA

This is something we talk about with families a lot.

One of the most important things about the NDIS is choice. If you don’t feel comfortable with a support worker or provider, you never need to explain yourself. It’s your right to feel safe, comfortable and choose the supports that work for you.

At AYWA, we believe choosing the right support worker can make a huge difference to someone’s quality of life, safety and independence. These are a few things we always encourage families to think about.

1) Experience matters
If someone has complex needs or a medical condition, it’s important that the person supporting them understands it, has knowledge of the condition, or is willing to communicate with the person’s care team to make sure they’re receiving the right support.

2) Insurance and safety
Support workers should have the right insurances and training so everyone is protected. Things like professional indemnity, public liability insurance, first aid, and being honest if something is outside their scope of practice.

3) Reliability
Consistency is really important. Knowing someone will show up and having familiar support workers can make a huge difference. It can be very uncomfortable having a different support worker arrive every day.

4) Communication
Good support teams keep families and coordinators informed. Clear communication avoids a lot of stress and helps make sure everyone supporting the participant is working together.

5) The right fit
Sometimes the most important thing is simply finding someone the participant feels comfortable with and trusts.

At the end of the day, good support is about more than just filling hours. It’s about helping people feel safe, respected and supported in their everyday lives.

If anyone ever has questions about NDIS supports or complex care, we’re always happy to have a chat.

This is Dot đź’š
Dot is the grandmother of our Managing Director, Amy. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease over 20 years ago, and her journey is one of the key reasons AYWA CARE Support Solutions came to life.
Through Dot, we truly learned the importance of compassion, dignity, and genuine care — not just for individuals, but for families walking the journey alongside them.
Sadly, Dot unfortunately succumbed to her illness in 2025. She will always be deeply loved, remembered, and honoured. Dot will forever be a part of the heart and meaning of AYWA — guiding why we do what we do every day. 💚
