When using Ribbond, please be sure to have a perfectly clean cut without any stray uncut fibers. Stray uncut fibers can "float" in the uncured filled composite on the teeth and then become a mechanical nuisance if later exposed to the patient's tongue.
Ribbond is made of the same super tough ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers used to make bullet proof vests. The advantage of using such tough fibers is that they are extremely fracture resistant, which is one of the main reasons for Ribbond's clinical success.
Unfortunately, because the fibers are so tough, normalellon scissors cannot cut them cleanly without leaving stray uncut fibers.
It is better to have a very fracture tough fiber reinforcement that requires special scissors to cut it than having a non-fracture tough fiber reinforcement that does not require special scissors but fractures during clinical use. Needing special scissors to cut the Ribbond is a relatively small price to pay for long-term clinical success.
Special Ribbond scissors to cut the Ribbond are included n in the starter kits and are also sold separately.
If you do not have the special scissors, you can cut the Ribbond outside of the mouth with a scalpel. If using a scalpel, place the Ribbond on a clean dry hard surface.
Cut the Ribbond with a scalpel using a back-and-forth sawing motion like cutting wood with a hand saw. Do not have the Ribbond under tension when cutting it.
