When people say “eye doctor,” it can mean different things. Here’s how they compare:
👩⚕️ Ophthalmologists
Role: Medical doctors who specialise in the eye.
What they do: Diagnose and treat all eye conditions, prescribe medication, and perform eye surgery.
Training: Medical school, followed by specialist training in ophthalmology.
👓 Optometrists
Role: Doctors of Optometry who provide primary eye care.
What they do: Perform eye exams, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and manage some common eye conditions.
Training: Optometry school (not medical doctors, but extensively trained in vision care).
🕶️ Opticians
Role: Technicians who specialise in vision correction products.
What they do: Fit and sell glasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions from ophthalmologists or optometrists.
Training: Certificate or diploma program (usually 1–2 years).
