Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical, functional and emotional purposes. It involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure done manually or with mechanical aids. The target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints or other connective tissue. Massage can be applied with the hands, feet, fingers, elbows and the forearm.
The benefits of massage are plenty. Its considered to be part of complementary and alternative medicine and is increasingly being recommended during the course of standard treatment for a variety of medical conditions. These include: anxiety, fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia, stress, myofascial pain syndrome, soft tissue strains and injury, temporomandibular joint pain, sports injury and relieving pain of osteoarthritis.
The origin of the word ‘massage’ is derived from either the Arabic word ‘mass’ meaning to touch or the Greek word ‘massein’ which means to knead. The oldest medical book found mentions the treatment of paralysis and reduced circulation using massage. The book was written in China in approximately 1000BC and is called ‘The Yellow Emperor’s Classics of Internal Medicine.’
In 19th century Sweden, the terminology we currently use to describe the different techniques (effleurage, petrisage and tapotement) emerged from Per Ling, a fencer and physical education teacher. He started a center for therapeutic exercise. This type of therapy was known as medical gymnastics and massage therapy.
Massage is not recommended for pregnant women and people with: bleeding disorders or taking blood thinning medication, burns, deep vein thrombosis, fractures, severe osteoporosis, severe thrombocytopenia and fevers.
