💜What has yoga got to do with preventing violence?
Yoga and meditation allow a wholesome and loving connection with oneself, one's body, an awareness of one's energetic system and emotional and mind regulation.

💜For many, yoga is a luxury but the benefits of mindfulness, meditation and yoga are the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, slowing heart rate and calming the body. Lower physiological arousal decreases the likelihood of aggressive reactions and promotes pause, reflection and choice.

When practiced in schools or in groups in community, it provides the opportunity to:

💜Improve emotional regulation and therefore impulse control.
Reduce stress, anger and hostility.
Support trauma healing, helping people feel safer and less reactive.
Encourage empathy, compassion and healthier relationships.
Build self-esteem, self-discipline and social connection, reducing risk of violent behaviour. 🧘🧘‍♂️🧘

It’s always such a privilege to be witness to moments of deep connection with the heart, with spirit and to feel the peace as people come home to themselves. ♥️

Teaching at festivals is not for everyone. But I absolutely love rolling out my mat on the grass, wondering who will turn up, what the energy will be, how they will respond. There's the factor of the unknown and unpredictable, the unmanageable, even, that makes it more of a challenge but in an exciting way. It's one thing to teach on Zoom to your regulars or in a studio, but the real test (and it can arise in those, too), is the unexpected. That is when teaching and learning really begins. Bring it on! ❤

Balance and awareness - so very real to me when I teach and learn. Every time I facilitate and even before, I am reminded and given lessons on my own privilege and my own inadequacies. The below quote is from a yoga teacher whom I truly admire and learn from and she says it all:
For me, the balance lies in teaching that offers progressive points of entry and where there’s no judgement about which practice you choose. There’s no hierarchy to the progressive stages of any practice, with advanced practice being defined as having the honesty to be exactly where you are. To be skillful and present rather than striving and performative.
At the same time, I must confess that it is important to me as a teacher to set some kind of example. The privilege of this knowledge and access to these teachings shouldn’t be wasted. This is one of the reasons I chose to go on a tour in a wheelchair after my accident: I wanted to express that Yoga is fundamentally about a state of mind and a way of being in the world that is not exclusively defined by the abilities of one’s body. And . . . it’s also important to me to model that one’s yoga practice can also contribute to one’s recovery and rehabilitation, health, vitality, mobility, strength, balance, as well as one’s emotional and mental equanimity. - Donna Fahri
