Have you seen “Stepperton” shorts/reels?! High energy, fast paced step classes that look like amazing fun. I used to love step classes when I owned a gym membership, so when I came across these reels the other day I wondered whether I could still manage a step class - I mean it is a very different kind of movement to walking and running that my body is used to. I chose a beginners’ step class on YouTube, but I didn’t have a step. So I improvised… it wasn’t super stable, but I made sure it wouldn’t slide, and was careful and it felt so great! Movement that was FUN!!
I went and got myself a proper gym step at Game that same day 😂
What kind of movement feels like fun to you?

How would you take care of your body if you thought about it as you would about a loved one – a partner, a child, a friend, a pet?
Would you be compassionate? Would you honour its biological needs? Would you move it in the way that it needs? Would you feed it what it needs – would you feed it enough? Would you speak words of kindness and appreciation?

Try it today.

BEFORE you assume that a smaller body will automatically get you the life you desire, it may be useful to examine your reasons for wanting weight-loss:

* Are you equating thinness with health?
* Do you believe that your worth is in what you look like?
* Do you want to occupy less space?

Could you focus on health supporting behaviours, and work on self-worth and self-acceptance, BEFORE you consider dieting or intentional weight-loss?

Listening to my body and resting as needed after an emotionally energising but physically demanding weekend staffing the first South African Woman Within Weekend since 2019! How wonderful to reconnect in a loving and supportive space after 3 years.

In what ways are you listening to, loving and supporting yourself at the moment?

I will be back with more Mind Body Eating posts soon…

“HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES”
Here’s what sometimes happens when we use clever tricks like substituting “healthier” versions for a food we are craving: we remain unsatisfied!

Have you ever had a craving for ice cream/cheesecake/a pastry/chips and tried a “healthy alternative” (ie low-cal versions, or made from other ingredients that are perceived to be healthier) instead?
How did that work out for you?
Sometimes the “healthy alternative” stills the desire temporarily, but often our minds keep going back to the thing we were actually craving, and we won’t/can’t stop until we are satisfied, comfortably full, comforted, pleasured…

How would it be if we could just have the food we are craving, feel better and move on with our lives?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t pause and feel our feelings and find out what is driving the desire too. We should do that! But eating a bunch of alternatives that never quite hit the spot seems like a long and unnecessary way to get to what we really wanted in the first place.

I am not much of a salad person (even though I make great salads!). I generally prefer warm, cooked foods, even in summer. But occasionally I crave this: something that is cool and savoury, something colourful, something that has some crunch… I think my mood craves it possibly more than my body today, although my body will like it too!

What food are you craving today? What part of you is craving it? There is no wrong answer.

Tune into your body and your senses and think: do I want something warm or cool, cooked or raw, smooth or textured, sweet or savoury…?

I am offering some new services in addition to the more traditional in-person and online counselling. I'll be introducing you to these over the coming days and they will be listed on my new website which is coming soon!

WALK & TALK COUNSELLING
Sometimes counselling can happen outside of the counselling room!

A Walk & Talk session is counselling as usual, but with the added element of movement and an opportunity to get outside. These walks are gentle and can help clients explore the joy of movement mindfully.

Sessions last anything from 20 minutes to about an hour, depending on the client’s ability.

To find out more about Walk & Talk sessions, or to find out how Mind Body Eating Counselling could help you to make peace with your body and heal your relationship with food, or to make an appointment to work with me, click the link in my bio.
