Back to School Reminder for Parents
If your child seems resistant, emotional, or unmotivated as school starts, take a breath.
This is often not defiance—it’s a sign that connection needs attention.
Before correcting behaviour, reconnect with your child.
When children feel safe, understood, and respected, learning and cooperation come far more easily.
January is not about tightening control.
It’s about restoring emotional safety.

Before school bags are packed and schedules take over, pause and ask:
How is my child really feeling about going back?
In Parent Effectiveness Training we are reminded that connection comes before cooperation.
A child who feels heard is far more likely to engage, learn, and manage stress.
Try this tonight:
“One thing you’re looking forward to… and one thing you’re worried about.”
No fixing. Just listening.

Ever notice how a child's behaviour can push your buttons—fast?

When adults feel triggered by a child’s actions, it’s often our own stress response kicking in. We might raise our voice, rush to control the situation, or take things personally—without meaning to.

But the truth is:

✨ A dysregulated adult cannot regulate a child. ✨

This free printable poster explores common adult reactions under stress—and more importantly, what helps instead.

💬 Learn to shift from reacting to responding
💛 Replace control with connection
🧠 Understand that behaviour is communication, not defiance
🌱 Support starts with the adult, not just the child

The Heart of Christmas: Connection
Holiday traditions remind us that love is something we practice through presence, attention, and compassion.
Children don’t need us to be perfect — they need us to be available.
When they can rest in our love, their emotional world becomes calmer, and maturity has space to blossom.
🌲 This Christmas, may your home be filled with connection, gentleness, and gratitude for the journey you are on as a family.

Help! I am a Parent...

As a young mother, raising children was a very daunting prospect indeed. I quickly became aware of the many challenges of parenting and the pressures I felt to be a "good" parent. The parenting references I had were primarily derived from how I was raised by my parents, and although I could use some of the positive things that came from my upbringing, there were aspects of my parent's parenting that I wanted to change or do differently. I instinctively knew that I lacked the awareness and competence required to be an effective parent.

Being trained as a Social Worker I was fortunate have access to resources in the social sciences domain and when I came across the Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) parenting training course by Gordon Training International, my husband and I jumped at the opportunity to learn more. The training was a life-changer and provided a much-needed base for our engagement with our children, and having gone through this training together, it gave us the opportunity to remind the other of the parenting techniques we have learned when the going got tough - as it will do most surely!

I have since adopted the skills I have learned in emotional intelligence and communication techniques, not only in my parenting, but also in all relationships in my life. Today, my involvement with Parent Effectiveness Training has led to me qualifying as an Instructor ten years ago, and with two sons aged 28 and 25, and with a precious ten-year old daughter (yes!), I am grateful to have learned the skills required for parenting and for all my personal relationships.
