When it feels like everything is a mess, or you're facing what seems to be an insurmountable task, just take the first step. Sometimes the weight of everything we have to do makes it hard to get up in the morning. So instead of looking at the summit, just look at your feet and take the first step. And never be too proud to ask for help. One day at a time, one minute at a time.

Today's tip for staying calm and focused: declutter! Our 'stuff' can really hold us back and cause unnecessary stress. Start small, moving from room to room in your house getting rid of everything you haven't used in the last year. Then, if you're feeling really brave, have a look at some of the other areas of your life that need decluttering. This could even include the friendships that no longer serve you. Today's tip for calm focus: gratitude. The simply act of saying thank you can elevate your mood. Practicing an 'attitude of gratitude' is another way for us to change our perception of our lives. Try to find five different things every day that you are grateful for, you could even make it part of your morning routine.

Today's tip for staying calm and focused - spend some time in nature.

The healing (and calming) effects of nature have always been known to us, though the research in this field has only scratched the surface. If you can, try to spend a little time every day somewhere green. You might not notice the effects immediately but over time you will see how you become less reactive, and more proactive.

Today's tip for calm focus - get enough sleep.

I recognise that this is easier said than done! Latest research shows we need 8 hours every night, anything less and our reflexes, decision making and ability to regulate our emotions decreases. What they found was people thought they were performing the same in these areas when they had only had 7 or 6 hours sleep, but in reality their abilities were diminishing significantly. So even though you think you're coping on less sleep, you are markedly less amazing than when you get a good night's rest. Plan your day better and say no to unnecessary time wasters so you can find those 8 hours.

Today's tip for calm focus - step out of your comfort zone every day.

To quote a very wise colleague 'To change, we have to do the uncomfortable'. Gretchen Rueben, author of The Happiness Project, says happiness can only happen when there is 'an atmosphere of growth'. So - happiness requires growth which requires challenging ourselves.

So much of our mental energy gets taken up by our 'stuff', and the obvious solution is to have less without compromising your quality of life. Check out one of our favourite Ted Talks for the psychology behind minimalism and some strategy. Obviously they are on the extreme end of the scale, but insightful and helpful nonetheless. Enjoy!
