Happy Workers’ Day | 1 May 🇿🇦

Workers’ Day reminds us of a powerful truth — the ability to work, to contribute, and to build something meaningful is not something to take for granted.

In , this day carries deep significance. It reflects not only the global fight for workers’ rights, but also our own journey through inequality, resilience, and transformation. It honours those who stood up, organised, and helped shape a more just and inclusive society.

Today, I find myself reflecting with gratitude.
- Grateful that I get to work.
- Grateful that I get to build.
- And especially grateful for the people building alongside me.

To my entire Proto Care (Pty) Ltd team — thank you. Your commitment, your growth, and your belief in what we are creating together mean more than words can fully capture.💙

Even while bootstrapping, with support between Shaper, Absa Group, Cloudflare and AWS Startup Credits, and my own contributions, and every volunteer, we are doing something that matters. We are not just building a platform — we are contributing to South Africa’s future by:
• Developing full-stack developers
• Creating real work experience opportunities
• Opening doors for those entering the industry
• Believing in people before the world fully sees them

That, to me, is what Workers’ Day is truly about.

Today, on Human Rights Day, we are reminded that the right to healthcare is not a privilege — it is a fundamental human right.

Yet in South Africa, millions of people still face barriers to accessing timely, quality care. Long queues, fragmented systems, and limited access to information continue to stand between patients and the care they deserve.

At Proto Care, we believe that empowering people with access to their own health information is one of the most powerful ways to restore dignity, choice and continuity of care.

Because when a patient understands their health, can track their journey, and is supported in making informed decisions — their voice becomes stronger.

And that is where human rights begin.

Today, we honour not only the progress made, but the responsibility we carry to keep building systems that are fair, accessible and patient-centred.

Recently we were blessed to witness something truly extraordinary in the garden — the blooming of the Queen of the Night, the rare dragon fruit flower that opens for only a short moment.

Many people grow these plants for years and never see it bloom.

Its beauty is striking, but what makes it even more special is its reminder:
Some of the most remarkable things bloom quietly, in their own time.

On International Women’s Day, we are reminded of the same truth about women everywhere.

Be bold.
Be courageous.

We are starting to onboard data analysts/scientists at Proto Care (Pty) Ltd this week.

Not because we suddenly realised we need data.
And not because technology suddenly became important.

We have been quietly building this for a long time.

Our laid the clinical foundation — capturing structured, meaningful healthcare information: symptoms, review of systems, condition groupings, patient education, warning signs, and care considerations. That work has been in place since late 2023.

Our then did the hard, often invisible work — turning clinical thinking into real systems. Building the frontend where patients feel seen and understood, and the backend where data is safely structured, persisted, and made ready for learning. Translating nursing logic into code, workflows, APIs, and infrastructure that can scale.

So why onboard data analysts and scientists now?

Because the next phase is not about more data.
It is about learning from outcomes — and from how real people move through care.

This is where all the pieces come together.

Over time Proto Care (Pty) Ltd will be able to notice patterns such as:
- When patients selected certain symptoms together, clinicians later confirmed a specific condition
- When patients were prompted early, deterioration was avoided, for example recognising a hypertensive crisis early and prompting urgent care instead of a delayed GP visit, helping to reduce the risk of stroke (to be continuously validated and proven)
- When certain review of systems questions were skipped, something important was later identified

This is not guessing.
This is pattern recognition based on lived experience.

A simple example:
If many patients report fatigue, weight loss, and night sweats, the system does not jump to conclusions. It surfaces a small number of clinically plausible scenarios and may prompt a fuller review of systems. Over time, and with clinician confirmation, the system becomes better at knowing which prompts add clarity and when to ask them.

Not to diagnose.
Not to replace clinicians.
But to support better conversations, earlier insight, and safer handovers.

This is used quietly, ethically, and humbly — learning from real journeys to improve future guidance.

We are excited to welcome our data analysts and data scientists into a platform that was designed clinically first, engineered with care, and always built around people.
