Sometimes the signs that our mental health needs attention aren’t loud or dramatic - they’re quiet, subtle shifts. One of the biggest signs? You stop feeling like yourself.

Maybe things that used to bring you joy feel flat, or you’re constantly tired no matter how much you rest. You might feel more irritable, withdrawn, or overwhelmed by things that once felt manageable.

It doesn’t have to be a crisis to matter. Small changes are often your mind’s way of asking for care.

Checking in with yourself, talking to someone you trust, or reaching out for professional support can make all the difference. You deserve to feel like yourself again.

Something I’ve been thinking about this week while seeing many new teen patients, is the common (and completely understandable) delay in reaching out for mental health help when needed.

Maybe we can chat a bit more about this, and how we can continue to advocate for earlier support for this particularly complex part of one’s life.

The hardest thing about asking for help with your mental health is often the quiet battle you fight before you even say a word. It’s the fear of being judged, misunderstood, or dismissed. It’s convincing yourself that your struggles aren’t “serious enough” or that you should be able to handle it on your own.

Sometimes it’s not even having the words to explain what’s going on inside you. Reaching out requires vulnerability, and that can feel incredibly exposing, but it’s also one of the bravest and most important steps toward healing.

Dr Shea Walls is beginning a 7-part series on anxiety - her favourite area of psychiatry, because of how common it is and how rewarding it can be to treat.

In this series, she’ll be breaking down the four most common anxiety disorders and the different ways they can be treated, helping to make sense of something so many people experience.

This is Part 1 - keep an eye out for the rest of the series

Stress Awareness Month 2026 carries the theme —a powerful reminder that even small, consistent actions can make a big difference.

Led by The Stress Management Society, this message encourages us to take control of our wellbeing, build healthier habits, and actively reduce stress in our daily lives.

By making positive changes for ourselves, we also create a ripple effect that can support and uplift those around us.

✨️ Part Two ✨️

Some patients benefit from a multidisciplinary approach because emotional, behavioural, and physical health are often deeply interconnected.

From a clinical perspective, therapy is most effective when it forms part of a broader care plan—working alongside medical practitioners, psychiatrists, or other specialists to address underlying contributors such as neurobiology, trauma, or chronic stress.

This collaborative approach allows for more accurate assessment, integrated treatment planning, and better long-term outcomes, ensuring that care is not only symptom-focused, but truly holistic.
