MEMORY CARE MANAGER Registered Nurse
Full-time | Permanent
Summary:
In this pivotal position, you will be the link between our residents, their families, our resident’s doctor, pharmacy and other medical multi-disciplinary fields (biokinetics, physiotherapy and other attending specialists e.g. neurologist/psychiatrist/psychologist).
The ideal candidate must be a Registered Nurse with management experience, ideally within a facility with memory impaired individuals (and/or psychiatry).
You must have a passion for working with elderly people and have proven nursing experience with geriatric residents diagnosed with dementia and/or psychiatry.
It is essential that you are amiable to assist our caregivers to fulfil their tasks thus ensuring optimal quality of life for each of our residents. Therefore, including the coordination, management and quality control of all caregiving services offered at Resthill Memory Care.
The ideal candidate must be a role model with confidence to take responsibility and accountability, with a holistic approach to best manage the overall memory care outcomes for our 40 residents.
While adhering to safety standards, you must coordinate the many facets of disease care that goes beyond medication.
General registered nurse duties within the homely setting of our residents. This is not a hospital.
Main Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
General:
• Confidence to take charge in managing the care component of for our 40 residents and their pets
• Independent nurse practitioner who will ensure ex*****on of the care expectations for our residents. Coordinate the many facets of disease care, including drug interventions as well as non-pharmacologic therapies, like a safe environment, social engagement and other issues that goes beyond daily medication
Memory Care Focused:
• To promote and enhance behaviour, cognition, and mood within a safe environment
• Clinical experience to take responsibility in our resident’s medical and memory care needs
• Strong communication skills essential, with experience in psychiatric interventions to provide emotional support to residents and their families
• Partaking in interviews with potential residents and their families
• Conduct periodical cognitive and functional assessments on our new and existing residents. These assessments will assist us in determining our resident’s cognitive and functional status
• Drafting and maintaining individualized memory care plans for all our residents
• Maximize the resident’s function in daily activities. To promote social opportunities and further streamline our activities program as per each resident’s interest. This will include the identification, implementation and promotion of individual-based activities for our residents.
• Relationship management with family members by providing regular, honest, and ethical updates. Assist with the emotional preparation of family members and to help manage their expectations.
Medication management:
• Medication administration
• Continuous review of current medication (effects and side effects) to ensure optimal therapeutic levels are achieved and maintained
• Timely and effective communication with the resident GP and pharmacist to review and adjust medication where indicated
Primary Health Care Related:
• Identifying acute and potentially chronic primary health medical concerns, with effective management thereof (including OTC management)
• Liaising with our resident GP to request and obtain prescriptions and initiate treatment plans
• Medical stock management
Staff Management and Administration:
• Staff management with a clear understanding of essential HR practices within South Africa and the labour relations act. This will include coaching, counselling, performance improvement plans and other disciplinary procedures
• Staff rostering and work allocations
• Reporting via HealthWare and other appropriate systems
• Providing onboarding, job shadowing, and to execute training initiatives
• To provide support to our capable care giver team
• Performing risk analysis to avoid incidents from occurring. OHS management.
• Standby on an ad hoc basis after hours
• Stand-in during COO’s leave periods
• Weekly feedback meetings with other management stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
• Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) 2025/2026
o Psychiatric qualification highly advantageous
• Proven nursing experience with at least 10 years clinical, and 3 years managerial experience within the healthcare industry (Memory Care / Psychiatric / Geriatric)
• High level of computer literacy is essential (reference MS Office, HealthWare, Box etc.)
• Working experience with individuals and families affected by memory impairing diseases highly advantageous
o Courses completed in dementia
o Knowledge of Eden Alternative Approach to resident care
• Working experience with palliative care highly advantageous. To be comfortable with palliative care towards end of life
• Experience in SDP / training (formal and informal) highly advantageous
• Valid driver’s license with own transport essential
Other Skills and Characteristics:
• Excellent time management skills. Well organized and systematic in your approach, and to be able to work under pressure
• Excellent communication skills (approachable and open) to effectively and professionally liaise with staff, residents, their families and all the members within the multi-disciplinary team
• Strong managerial skills. To be easily adaptable with a positive and embracing attitude towards change. To be able to motivate and positively influence others. To be assertive, yet compassionate.
