B O U N D A R I E S |

This is a tricky one for my people pleasing peers. Is setting boundaries selfish? Does it make us lazy? NO! Are we sacrificing our own mental health to serve the needs of others? YES.

Think carefully about what your needs are- and make sure your boundaries allow for that to happen.

Making the decision to take a risk can be anxiety provoking and overwhelming. So often we are fearful of what *might* happen or what *should* happen… becoming trapped in the possibilities often blocks us from taking the step. We can often get in our own way!

It’s important to remember that in order for us to reap the rewards, gain the outcome or experience change, we need to be willing to take the risk, regardless of how intimidating it might be.

Trust that you will make the right decision for yourself at the right time.

C O N F L I C T |

Conflict is often a difficult one for many people, but it’s a normal part of life. The questions I like to ask myself is “Is this an effective way of solving the issue?” … We might be overly driven by emotion, sensitive, or defensive- which can escalate a conflict instead of resolve it.

It’s important to remember that sometimes conflict is unavoidable, but it can be resolved effectively.

When effective attempts at problem solving yield no result.. ask yourself - is this really my problem? Often times it’s not actually about you, and it’s actually larger factors that are out of your control exacerbating the issue.

Accept responsibility for your impact on the situation while understanding that, sometimes, it’s not really about you alone.

Sometimes there is pressure to create a ‘new year new me’ context … for some people it’s helpful but for others it can feel a bit overwhelming.

Remember that your goals, reflections, to do lists and ideals are for you an you alone. There is no need to feel pressure to achieve, this is your journey and your process. Be kind to yourself and remember we cannot control everything in our lives- only how we respond to what happens.

So often we have these massive goals and we are constantly chasing the new thing, the next step forward, the next achievement. I find that instead of celebrating our achievements we simply set the next goal without feeling the happiness of our success.

This is reminder to celebrate your successes, no matter how big or small. Do something to celebrate that makes you happy!

It could be as simple as enjoying a cup of tea, having a hot bath, eating your favourite snack, or dancing to your happiest song! Treating yourself doesn’t need to be extravagant.

You deserve to be happy today, do something for yourself!

Sometimes when faced with a big decision it’s really hard to feel confident in the outcome. The ‘what if’s’ and doubts can creep in and make us uncomfortable.

I think it’s important to trust ourselves- understanding that any decision we made, if we thought it through, was the right one for that time. If we reflect and take time to carefully consider our decision- regardless if the outcome is what we intended- we grow through the process.

AFFIRMATIONS |

During difficult times, it’s sometimes hard to find any energy to self care. Simple affirmations are exceptionally useful when you feel you can’t do much else.

Find a sentence that resonates with you and hold this consciously in your mind for a few moments and repeat as needed.

HEALING |

It’s so tricky when we start to feel progress and growth in areas that we work on- and then something happens and we slide straight back into our old ways. This sometimes makes us feel like we aren’t working hard enough, or will never change… we might even feel like failures.

What’s important to remember is that working on something new, trying to heal, change and grow, is exceptionally challenging. It’s okay to take 3 steps backward sometimes, or to feel stuck in one place for a while, trust the process- you will eventually move forward again.

You are brave
You can keep going
You are strong and resilient
You should be proud of everything you are

TIME |

Therapy is most often 1 hour a week- this doesn’t seem like a lot of time to create meaningful change for each client.

The other side of this is the amount of time that gets spent planning treatment outcomes, ensuring evidence based interventions and preparing for our clients. I think of them often, small things remind me of them, I read a lot to ensure I’m the most effective.

Clients also have a lot of responsibility placed on them to do the work at home, to use time for reflection, to monitor their thoughts, do their homework and apply their lessons in between sessions.

Psychotherapy is not just one hour, it’s an ongoing process of change.

CONTROL |

The feeling of being out of control can make us feel uncomfortable and even anxious. All too often we think that we can control things that we simply cannot- and this creates feelings of instability.

Perhaps you were late for a meeting because a truck broke down across the freeway… although being late creates discomfort for many, there was no way that we could have known about the truck, nor could we have moved it out of the way.. At times like these it’s important to be able to sit within the discomfort and surrender to the fact that we have no control in the traffic.

With this said- what we can control is how we explain, cope, and react to our situation. We can control how we are impacted, and what we do with those feelings.

A useful tool is to ask oneself- I this actually within my control? What can I control effectively in this context? Can I handle this feeling of being out of control more appropriately?

MAKING A CHOICE |

This quote is taken from a book that truly changed my life.

The Choice- by Edith Egar.

The story of resilience, hope and strength is empowering and a must read for anyone who needs some inspiration to fight for the life they want. Sometimes simple questions like these can create the reflection and clarity one needs. Make a choice, only you have control in your own life.

TRUSTING THE PROCESS |

Going to therapy isn’t just about big events, debilitating symptoms or feeling entirely overwhelmed. Of course, during these times therapy is beneficial and may assist with tools to cope.

Therapy is a process of exploration and then understanding anything about oneself- the space to tell your own story.

Therapy gives a person the gift of insight and personal development- it can help a person understand patterns in their lives, give reasons for specific feelings and assist in feeling confident in who they are and why they are that way.

One of the most important elements of therapy is to ‘trust the process’ … it’s not always comfortable- growth and change never is- but it’s a gift you choose to give yourself.
