Caitlyn Waters OT Hi there, I'm Cait! I have been working as an Occupational Therapist since 2010.

I have a lot of new followers - plus I don't think I've ever actually introduced myself on this platform - so here goes...

My name is Caitlyn Waters. But everyone knows me as Cait (or my isiZulu name, Ketiwe 😋). I am a mom to a 5 year old boy who is my absolute everything.

I am an Occupational Therapist with a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT) and Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).

I worked in public hospital settings (including NICUs and a specialized spinal rehabilitation facility) for a total of 13 years.

And now - for the past 2.5 years - I have been working at a special needs school which caters for children with Autism (ASD), medical conditions such as Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Epilepsy, and children with ADHD and/or learning difficulties who require a long-term remedial school setting.

I absolutely LOVE my job. Honestly, it fulls my cup on a daily basis. And I am so very grateful to work with an incredible multi-disciplinary team of therapists!

I called my page "Shine" for two reasons:

1. That is my goal. To help each child reach their full potential and shine in their daily lives.

and 2. Because of the quote from C.S. Lewis which states "Don't shine so that others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see Him".

💚💚💚💚💚

In honor of World OT Day, I thought I'd post a short video about some of the amazing assistive devices we have in our department at

1. A reader pen. This little device is such a winner for children who have significant reading challenges. You use the pen to highlight a portion of text, and it will then read it out to you.

2. Different joysticks. Many children with complex physical impairments affecting both their arms and legs require motorized wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are operated by using a joystick.
Having different types of joysticks available in our department- as well as a computer program called "look to learn" which has fun, graded games for children to learn cursor control- allows us to teach children the skills required to operate joysticks with precision (so they don't injure themselves or others when "driving" along the corridors or in the classroom).

3. Adapted keyboards. These are great for children with low vision who are learning to type on a computer. The larger keys with high contrast colours, allows children to see the letters / numbers / symbols on each key more easily.

There are many more types of assistive devices out there which can help your child to navigate their environment/ school work more easily! Chat to an OT about what options may be available for your child.

(You could add a "colour-by-number" type aspect to this task as a way to include number recognition in the activity too 🤓)

Designing and making assistive devices to help this little guy with dyskinetic CP (athetoid) to be able to drink independently.

**A straw bottle would be better suited, as it doesn't require as much active shoulder flexion. But he isn't able to suck through a straw yet (our Speech Therapist is busy working on this!), so this is our next best option - for now.**

I feel like the term " 'n boer maak 'n plan " should be used interchangeably for an OT too... because we are ALWAYS problem solving and finding ways to make things easier or more affordable 😄

The assistive device you see in the first few images is called a "FUNctional hand". It's a really amazing gadget for those who have limited hand function... but it's pretty pricey.

So I tried an old hair band trick (check out the short- badly filmed- video 😄) and voila! Success!

This dude seemed pretty happy with the results too 🥰

🌟 Learning to tie shoelaces.. in action this time!! 🌟

This little dude learnt the 1st stage of tying laces within 5 minutes yesterday! Swipe to see how quickly he did it at the end, and how proud he was of himself for getting it right! 😍😍

Did I mention I love what I do? 🥰😋🥰

Such a simple way to teach children how to tie their shoelaces 🌟 ..the different colour laces makes it so much easier for kids to distinguish between the 2 laces, which- in turn- makes the tying technique easier for them to process visually!
