While we're building our online profiles and personal brands, our kids are building an entirely different narrative about who we are.

My daughters keep score differently than my career. They count memories in dance parties, not deliverables.

In our kids' worlds, our greatest achievements have nothing to do with quarterly targets or client acquisitions. Instead, they're measured in the number of times we abandoned our professional composure to be silly with them.

They measure success in shared laughter, not revenue. They value presence over productivity, because for them success isn't about where we're going, but about fully experiencing where we are.

There's a stark contrast between their metrics and ours. (They don't even measure life by metrics or numbers, for starters.) Furthermore, to your kids there's no professional version of you and parental version of you; there's just you.

My daughters, then, have indirectly encouraged me to be easier going and more 'human' in my professional capacity. I find that I don't need to put up a carefully curated facade any longer. It actually feels good: you will quickly find that you do not become some crude, dishevelled 'inappropriate' person if you give your personality some oxygen during business hours. And guess what? My standards and quality of work haven't dropped at all either.

Perhaps this is the plot twist in the story of modern work-life integration: harmony isn't attained when we perfectly balance both worlds, but when we sometimes let them collide in all their messy, unscripted glory.

Most products change appearance every few years - usually 5 or less. Continually refreshing product to keep up with contemporary sensibilities and competitors is something that most organisations are compelled to do. Some companies and products are able to buck that trend, however.

The following have distinctive designs that have changed very little over time:

• Coca-Cola glass bottle
• Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses
• Vespa scooters
• Levi's 501 jeans
• Smeg fridges

Why do they do this and how do they continue to thrive with these 'old' designs? It makes a lot of sense when you break it down...
