KZN Mental Health Advocacy Group

KZN Mental Health Advocacy Group A network of people who champion mental health. Launched in 2015, we are a diverse group of activists

This is a 'labour of love', grassroots, community-based network of patients, professionals, NGOs, civil servants, donors, and citizens who care about mental health. We advocate for better services in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and we help create awareness of mental health and substance abuse problems, and the options that are available for treatment, rehabilitation, and care. Our two main events are the annual Durban Mental Health Symposium and the Durban Advocacy Walk.

As the KZN Mental Health Advocacy Group we support the calls to declare gender-based violence and femicide a national emergency.

There can be no mental health without safety first. We must work towards a caring society in which girls and women feel safe both at home and in public places, and free from harm.

This is our collective responsibility.

On Friday - create awareness about women's rights, GBV, and amplify calls for improved mental healthcare services in the province to help deal with the root causes that lead to violence in society.

Lawyer Previn Vedan discusses employee rights in the workspace.

If your mental health is suffering due to work-related stress or intimidation, you have the right to be heard.

The law is on your side.

The CCMA is a free, accessible platform where an employee can lodge a complaint for unfair labour practice, unfair discrimination, or constructive dismissal.

In addition, the Labour Court or Labour Appeal Court can intervene.

When people feel respected, they create more. When they feel safe, they stay longer.

The World Health Organisation guidelines suggest that a minimum goal of about 20-minutes of physical activity per day is good for our mental health.

Research shows that we need to reduce sedentary behaviour – such as sitting for long periods of time. Sedentary behaviour that requires little mental effort, e.g. watching TV or just scrolling social media, has been linked to increased risk of future depression.

Awareness of the mental health benefits of movement and exercise has been growing around the world. Exercise can have a powerful impact on our wellbeing – from promoting general health and building positive social connections to helping prevent or treat mental and physical health conditions.&nbs
