Parasita Balasana - Extended child’s pose is one of the most underrated asanas. More than just a resting or recovery pose, it is fantastic for decompression of the spine and when practiced with full extension, by really reaching through the fingertips and tailbone, it creates traction, really creating space between the vertebrae, and can be useful in treating degenerative disc disease and can be especially beneficial for people with of the spine (like me).
When combined with breath it calms and relaxes the mind, reducing anxiety and releasing tension in your lower back muscles, chest, hamstrings, and shoulders. It generates increased blood circulation to the brain which helps the brain to receive its nutrients and oxygen. The slightly widened leg position brings tension release to the hips and the gentle compression created in the tummy area aids with digestion, so it’s a great one to add to your morning practice.
Child’s pose is a surrendering pose. Practicing mindfully, we are surrendering our body to the gravity of the earth. The inward folding position of our body and resting our Ajna (third eye) chakra on the earth, sends a message to our nervous system, telling it that it is safe to surrender, and relax, fully supported by the earth.
This calming and nourishing position is wonderful for grounding and reestablishing your connection to the earth, especially when practiced outdoors, and in nature.
