South Africa is part of the SADC sub-region and together they face a number of environmental and developmental challenges. On that regard GESSA recognises strategic opportunities that are available in pursuing and implementing a developmental agenda at national, sub-regional, continental and global levels. Such opportunities include, amongst others, encouraging technology development and transfer, leveraging global financial resources, and enhancing technical skills development and transfer from the developed to developing countries, whilst also promoting south-south cooperation. GESSA further recognises that unless these opportunities are identified and exploited, the country runs the risk of aggravated impacts of climate change and climate variation leading to, amongst others, reduced economic growth, severe food insecurity, severely impacted primary industries, increased unemployment and poverty, other social stresses especially amongst the most vulnerable communities, in particular the poor, the displaced, women and children. This company further recognises that some climate change impacts will be beyond any measurable control and will have severe effects on human health, land, infrastructure, food security, water and all other sectors. It is committed to contribute to implanting some climate change adaptation strategies in the water sector, biodiversity sector, agriculture sector, energy sector, etc. Innovative measures and appropriate technologies will be promoted by this company. These will among other things include promotion of climate smart agricultural production and water saving toolkits. The current drought is already having severe impacts including fatalities of both humans and animals in South Africa and the rest of the SADC Region.
