Ayurveda Day is celebrated on Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth day of Dhanvantri who is the father of Ayurveda and medicine. He imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of mankind and to help rid it of the suffering of disease.

It is also Dhanteras, the first day that marks the festival of Diwali, a day that is considered extremely auspicious for making wealth.

The real Dhan (wealth) is our health. So today, let's pray for the best of health, physical, mental and emotional, for all beings on this planet. Let us aspire for the blessings of Ayurveda to reach everyone in the universe.

Ayurveda Day is being celebrated around the world on Friday 13 November 2020 as a global initiative to promote and preserve the health science of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is perceived as one of the most ancient and well documented system of medicine equally relevant in modern times. Prevention of disease and promotion of health is the main aim of Ayurveda.

Ritu Sandhi - The transition period between seasons.

We've all experienced a lack in immunity moving from one season to the next. Our bodies get used to the routine, food and lifestyle of the outgoing season, in our case Winter, and without some preparation, switching to the new season, Spring, immediately is a shock to the system which affects our immunity.

In Ayurveda, the subject Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) teaches us how to adapt to the various seasons and seasonal changes by making adjustments to our diet, lifestyle and behaviour. By following these guidelines we can enjoy optimum health throughout the year.

I haven't been able to post in a while, but much is in planning for making it easier for all of you to make Ayurveda a part of how you live. I am so happy to see spring blossoms in my garden and it's such a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can be. Spring is my favourite time of year. It's as if mother nature is saying "let's party!".

Ayurveda considers spring to be the ideal time to detox and build up a strong immunity (bala). By doing this we strengthen the body for the rest of the year and also avoid the diseases often associated with the change from cold to warm weather.

Studies say that it is difficult for our bloodstream to absorb turmeric, but Ayurvedic texts have always considered milk as one of the best vehicles for herbs (we call it ANUPANA). Clinical studies have now shown that curcumin, the main active ingredient of turmeric, showed high bio-availability, faster rate and better absorption when given in a fat medium.

Apart from giving food its yellow colour, science is backing what Indians have known for a long time, that turmeric contains compounds with medicinal properties. Curcumin, the main compound, has been found to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is also a very strong antioxidant.

Inflammation is the body's normal response to injuries or infections. Cells of the immune system travel to the sites of injury or infection and cause inflammation. The four signs of inflammation include warmth, redness, swelling and pain.

Without the inflammatory response, which is directly linked to immunity, foreign invaders could easily take over your body and kill you. Inflammation, when left untreated, becomes a major problem inappropriately attacking the body's own tissues.

Science has found that inflammation plays a major role in almost EVERY CHRONIC DISEASE. And so ANYTHING that can help fight inflammation is of potential importance in preventing and even treating disease.

Shared by my dear friend and it reminded me of the amount of time I spent studying TURMERIC (Haldi in Hindi). Stay tuned for more on the subject of this ancient herb.

"If I had only a single herb to depend upon for all possible health and dietary needs, I would without hesitation choose the Indian spice Turmeric." - David Frawley

SITOPALADI - Another potent remedy I remember from my childhood and one that's been very relevant at the moment.

Sitopaladi Churna (powder) contains the simplest of ingredients (commonly found in most Indian kitchens) and is used as a base for other Ayurvedic remedies used to treat chronic respiratory diseases.

It can be used alone to support a healthy immune system, treat cough and sore throat or throat irritation, tonsillitis, decrease phlegm in the lungs, improve digestion and appetite and counter free radicals.

This remedy is always stocked in my home dispensary. My 2 year old calls it candy (it tastes that good!). This particular brand is certified organic; you can tell as soon as you open the bottle and it sure does the job!

Mix a teaspoonful of the powder into a teaspoonful of honey, separate into 3 equal parts and consume 1 part 3 times a day.
