In June 2025, a tragic bus accident changed the lives of several young girls from Lesotho. They were travelling to church with their youth group when the bus was involved in a collision, resulting in severe burn injuries.
The children were admitted in critical condition to Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital, where they required immediate and highly specialised care. Among them was Thato, a 14-year-old girl who sustained extensive burns covering most of her body.
Due to the severity of their injuries, the girls underwent multiple surgical procedures. Their care at Busamed Modderfontein required the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and other allied healthcare professionals.
Dr Vered Lack, Pediatric Surgeon, led the surgical management, while Dr Mantsebo Ralise, Specialist Physician, closely monitored their medical recovery. The allied health team, including physiotherapists, supported mobility, functional recovery, and rehabilitation, while providing essential nutritional care to promote healing.
Despite immense physical and emotional challenges, Thato demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience throughout her recovery. After months of dedicated treatment and care at Busamed Modderfontein, she was discharged in December.
Her journey, along with that of the other girls, serves as a powerful reminder of hope, resilience, and the compassionate, multidisciplinary care provided at Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital.
