It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved Aunty Lenie is no longer with us. She took ill while in the UK and was later admitted to Tygerberg Hospital. In the early hours of this morning, after a brave fight, her organs gave in and she passed away peacefully.

Aunty Lenie was part of the FDC family for many years and touched so many lives with her kindness and warm heart. She got to live her dream of travelling overseas, and now she has earned her angel wings.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her beautiful family during this incredibly difficult time. She will never be forgotten and will always remain in our hearts.

May her soul rest in peace. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿค

We ended off last week Friday on a high note with a huge donation arriving at 13:30! ๐Ÿ’›

With the help of one of our very thoughtful moms who reached out to her friends, one of whom had a connection at Dis-Chem, we were blessed with an incredible donation.

A huge thank you to the Dis-Chem Team for their generous contribution of nappies, linen savers, two camp cots, a pram, and more. We are truly overwhelmed by your kindness and thoughtfulness.

Yesterday was a busy and heartwarming day at Friends Day Centre!

We were joined by a wonderful group of 15 international students from the College of Colorado, hosted by Phatu from CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange).

The students arrived with bags filled with donations from our wish list, including nappies, wipes, milk, coffee, sugar, tea, toys, art supplies, and so much more.

They spent the day with us enjoying messy play in the classrooms and having fun, meaningful interactions with our learners. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and connection.

We are truly thankful for their kindness and generosity. Your support makes a real difference in the lives of our learners! ๐Ÿ’›

Meet Cathy Boulle, one of our amazing Programme Implementers! ๐ŸŒŸ

Cathy has been part of the Friends Day Centre family for two years and truly puts her heart into everything she does โ€” from organising exciting outings to the fire station to creating fun, educational classroom activities that align with the curriculum provided by the LSPID Team.

Whether itโ€™s baking waffles or experimenting with elephant toothpaste, Cathy is always ready to bring joy, creativity, and laughter to our learners. She ensures that every child feels loved, included, and empowered to go above and beyond their abilities. ๐Ÿ’›

At Friends Day Centre, we believe that every learner deserves to thrive in an environment that supports their dignity, well-being, and potential. Many of our learners face severe to profound physical and/or intellectual disabilities, and the spaces in which they learn, receive therapy, and interact with others play a direct role in their development. Over time, the Centreโ€™s facilities have naturally worn, with faded paint, outdated infrastructure, and limited accessibility, which can impact the learnersโ€™ experience and the morale of staff and caregivers.

To address this, the Building Upliftment Project was born. A parent and management led initiative designed to transform the Centre into a welcoming, modern, and functional space. The project focuses on renovating classrooms, therapy rooms, and communal areas, repairing and repainting worn surfaces, and prioritizing accessibility throughout the Centre. Each improvement is carefully planned to create spaces that inspire joy, comfort, and pride for learners, staff, and families alike.

We are thrilled to announce that a private foundation, after visiting the Centre, has generously donated R800,000 towards the project, doubling their initial pledge of R400,000. The funds have already been received and will make a significant contribution to the planned renovations.

Phase 1 of the project focuses on upgrading public areas, including entrances, hallways, bathrooms, and shared learner spaces, ensuring they are safe, accessible, and visually welcoming. Phase 2 will extend these improvements to classrooms, therapy rooms, and offices, introducing new flooring, lighting, storage, and sensory spaces that enhance daily learning and therapy experiences.

The impact of these upgrades will be both immediate and long-lasting. Learners will benefit from safer, more stimulating environments that encourage engagement, independence, and confidence. Staff and caregivers will feel renewed pride and motivation as they work in spaces that reflect the Centreโ€™s values. Families will gain reassurance knowing their children are cared for in professional, safe, and nurturing surroundings.

While Phase 1 has received significant support, additional donations are still needed to realize the full vision of the project. Every contribution, whether financial, material, or time brings us closer to creating a Centre that truly supports the potential of every learner.

Parents and community members are warmly invited to participate in the project. Opportunities include fundraising, volunteering during painting and mural days, contributing skills or materials, or simply sharing the project with your networks. Together, we can ensure that Friends Day Centre continues to be a place where learners with severe disabilities are seen, heard, and valued, and where the community can take pride in supporting inclusive, life-changing education and therapy.

Letโ€™s uplift our Centre, uplift our learners, and create spaces filled with hope, dignity, and possibility.

As our Christmas Concert approaches, weโ€™ll be holding a Second-Hand Goods Sale to help raise funds for the Centre. ๐ŸŽ„โœจ

If youโ€™re clearing out, we would be very grateful for any gently worn clothing (childrenโ€™s and adultsโ€™) as well as toys in good condition that could be sold at the sale. ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ“ Donations can be dropped off at the Centre from Monday to Friday, 08:00 AM โ€“ 2:00 PM, or we can arrange collection upon request.

Your contributions will help make our event extra special while supporting the ongoing care of our learners. Thank you for your kindness and generosity! ๐Ÿ’›
