A new study reveals that delaying carbohydrate intake after high-intensity exercise can reduce next-day performance by up to 30%.

Researchers found that muscles are most receptive to glucose immediately post-workout due to GLUT4 activation, which speeds initial glycogen replenishment.

Even with similar total carbohydrate consumption, athletes who waited three hours before refueling reported higher perceived effort and slower recovery.

The findings suggest hormonal responses and muscle repair processes play roles beyond glycogen restoration.

Simple post-workout snacks like fruit smoothies or rice cakes can help kickstart recovery.
