Listening to your body, even when changes feel small or easy to dismiss, is one of the most important steps in preventative care.

Prevention starts with awareness: noticing early signs, asking questions and seeking professional medical advice sooner rather than later. Acting early can make a meaningful difference, support timely care and help protect your long-term health and well-being.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, trust that instinct. Consult a GP or physician to guide your next steps.

In recognition of Kidney Awareness , Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital recently hosted a Renal Support Group event dedicated to patients and the broader community.

The session brought together over 70 renal patients along with their families for an engaging and informative experience focused on education, support, and shared learning. Attendees gained valuable insights from the Transplant Team, while one of our resident Nephrologist , Dr J Moodley led an interactive open Q&A session, addressing patient concerns and providing clarity on kidney health and treatment pathways.

The programme was further enriched by Physiotherapy guidance and Occupational Therapy-led discussions and exercises, empowering patients with practical techniques to improve mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

A key highlight of the session was guidance on nutritional management, with important discussions around dietary choices and how informed eating habits can support better renal health outcomes.

Together, we continue to promote awareness, empower our community, and support those on their renal health journey.

Project Update: Advancing Cardiac Care at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital

We are proud to share an exciting progress update on the development of our upcoming Cardiac Wing, a transformative project designed to elevate heart care for our community.

Construction is progressing steadily, with key structural milestones now completed and internal work well underway. This purpose-built cardiac facility has been specifically designed to support early diagnosis, advanced intervention, and seamless recovery. Placing patient safety, comfort, and clinical excellence at the heart of every decision.

The new Cardiac Wing will feature a modern catheterisation laboratory (Cathlab), expanded high-care and ICU capacity, upgraded cardiac wards, and dedicated diagnostic areas. These enhancements will allow our multi-disciplinary cardiac team to deliver faster, efficient, and integrated care, from emergency cardiac events to planned interventional and surgical procedures.

Importantly, the project reflects our long-term commitment to meeting the growing demand for cardiovascular services. By investing in advanced technology, improved infrastructure, and specialised clinical spaces, we are strengthening our ability to manage complex cardiac conditions closer to home, reducing delays, improving outcomes, and enhancing the overall patient experience.

Beyond bricks and mortar, this development represents a collaborative effort between clinicians, hospital leadership, and project partners, all working towards a shared vision: exceptional, patient-centred cardiac care.

As we move closer to completion, we look forward to sharing further updates and welcoming patients, families, and referring practitioners into a facility that sets a new benchmark for cardiac excellence. The future of heart care is taking shape and it’s happening right here a Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital.

The word “nuclear” in a medical setting can be daunting. But for Dr Bruce Young, a nuclear medicine physician working alongside Life Healthcare, it is often the most valuable way to help treating doctors get clarity and define tailored cancer management plans with their patients.

In this interview, Dr Young explains how advanced scans like PET-CT work, why medical radiation is carefully controlled and safe and how these technologies help doctors better understand cancer and other diseases. At its core, nuclear medicine is about insight, giving your healthcare team the information they need to guide treatment decisions with confidence.

For patients and families navigating difficult diagnoses, that clarity can make all the difference. “He looked at my results and said, ‘Don’t worry, I can sort this out – kidney replacement therapy is an option available.’ Immediately, when he told me, my mind changed. I was positive all the way.”

For 63-year-old Henry Mntungwa, managing kidney failure involved more than just addressing his medical condition. A significant part of his journey of living with the condition was the emotional support he received from the Life Healthcare team. After sharing his kidney health story with us on our Moments that Matter series, we followed up with Henry to gain more insight into his journey.

Did you know that diseases affecting your blood vessels can directly impact your kidney health?

Healthy kidneys rely on good blood flow to function properly. When blood vessels are narrowed, blocked, or damaged, the kidneys may suffer often silently. Early detection saves kidneys. Simple blood tests, urine tests, and vascular imaging can help identify problems early before permanent damage occurs.

Kidneys are your body’s natural filtration system - removing waste, balancing fluids and helping keep you healthy. If you’re at higher risk for kidney disease, or your doctor has a concern, they may request kidney screening tests to check your kidney function. Kidney disease often has no early symptoms. Testing helps detect problems early, when treatment works best.

Speak to your doctor about your kidney health.

This week, we were proud to officially open our new digital PET-CT unit at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital, in partnership with GE HealthCare – bringing advanced diagnostic oncology care closer to the communities we serve.

This state-of-the-art scanner, the first digital PET-CT scanner in the Life Healthcare Group and only the second privately operated PET-CT scanner in the Western Cape, gives doctors clearer, more detailed information to help manage cancer with greater accuracy, avoiding both under- and overtreatment.

We’re proud to share that Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital has completed 100 PET-CT scans since the opening of its nuclear medicine unit in November 2025. This milestone represents far more than a number. For specialists and cancer patients, PET‑CT technology enables more precise tumour detection, clearer assessment of disease and personalised treatment planning, often supporting more targeted, less invasive care.

Have you heard of mole mapping?

It's an advanced dermatological screening that carefully tracks and monitors your moles over time to help detect signs of skin cancer. Early intervention can also reduce the need for a biopsy. Your skin tells a story about your health. Staying informed and monitoring your moles can save your life, so we’ve compiled a list of changes to look out for.
