Food For Thought

Food For Thought Qualified and accredited in the medical field of Integrative and corrective Nutrition, Perimenopause and Gut Microbiome. Optimal Health and Beauty.

Qualified Aesthetician specializing in face and scalp, for hair regrowth, with PRP and product options. I originally started my healthcare career as a rep in the pharmaceutical Industry 27 years ago. I went on to apply for and be selected from SA, through Tyco Surgical to study in Paris, France as an internationally qualified Surgical Technician. This instilled great admiration and respect for the allopathic and surgical realm of medicine. I changed direction in my career after experiencing a devastating illness myself, (and also a break inbetween while having my children) and decided to study Nutritional Principals and focus on preventative approaches to ill health. I managed to completely reverse my condition and I am continuously learning and keeping abreast of the latest science and literature pertaining to the field of Nutrition, whole foods and human health and the influences of lifestyle choices. I studied a certification course in foundational Nutrition through a distance learning program in the UK (ION) and so began my appetite, so to speak, into the world of food as one of the main tools for health. I also went on to do a specific Ketogenic dietary principals course and further low GL dietary research, both for weight loss and Optimal Health to better understand the possible effects on both health and disease. I recently completed a university course (2020) through Boulders University, Colorado, in The Human Gut Microbiome, for a better understanding of what gut microbiology means regarding our Gut Microbiome. A fascinating field and I love how it pertains to our overall health and digestion. I then signed up for two online courses through the Commune Platform with Dr Zach Bush on the Gut Microbiome and the relationship with our Digestive System and ultimate biological health and their correlations. I also completed a course on Navigating Perimenopause with Dr Sara Gottfried and how dietary changes / options and natural supplements can impact and improve our health as we go through Perimenopause and Menopause. In 2023 I applied for and was accepted into a Masters and PhD program with Lifestyle Prescription University in Lifestyle Medicine and Root Cause Analysis. This will take some time being a full time mom and part time worker and the massive cost involved! Although on hold, I hope to be able to complete this in the future. Furthermore, as at 2024, I enrolled in an online certified Menopause Coach course (completed), as I am so interested in the relationship between our changing biology during Perimenopause and lifestyle and dietary choices and the impacts thereof and hope to help more women navigate, supportively, exactly what I am trying to navigate myself at this time of life in a responsible and caring way! I am PASSIONATE about sharing what I have learnt and love helping people achieve their health and weight loss goals or point them in the right direction. I spend a long time with clients who choose to come and see me, to share, listen, motivate and empower them to gain the knowledge and tools to make lifelong, life changing lifestyle adjustments to achieve better health. if you are battling with weight, perimenopausal symptoms and Insulin resistance symptoms, inflammation, immune health or even mental health, why not give me a call and lets talk it out. You have the power and choice to heal your life, and your body. Disclaimer: I am NOT a licensed or registered nutritionist or practitioner and therefore am unable to contract in to any regulatory bodies or medical aids. The information I share and suggestions, dietary advice, guidance and coaching I give is based on the information I receive from a client and the combined years of study courses completed (and ongoing), as well as experience, both observed and personal, over the last 27 years. Any guidance or mentoring is not to diagnose or replace any professional medical advise or conditions and should always be discussed with your healthcare provider. All consultations, should you choose to see me, are private and confidential and any medically related issues or conditions should be discussed with a qualified medical practitioner.

Recent research from the UK Biobank suggests that the type and amount of carbohydrates we eat may be connected to long-term brain health. In this large prospective study of over 200,000 adults, diets with a lower glycemic index (GI) were associated with more favorable cognitive patterns over time, while higher glycemic load (GL) diets showed the opposite trend.

In some ways, we might expect this result. It reinforces an essential theme in nutrition science: the way we metabolize carbohydrates may influence not only energy and metabolic health, but also cognitive aging.

The takeaway is not the restriction or vilification of carbohydrates, but rather the awareness of amount, type, and sequencing of diverse carbohydrates, particularly those that are slower-digesting, fiber-rich, and part of a balanced, whole-food dietary pattern.

Do genetics play a role?

Since dry skin is an inherent skin type – there is a genetic component, whereas dehydration is acquired.

Key points about genetic influence
• Sebaceous gland activity
– The baseline output of sebum (your skin’s natural oil) is strongly influenced by genes.
– Variants that reduce androgen receptor sensitivity or alter enzymes involved in lipid synthesis (like 5-α-reductase) can mean less sebum and a naturally drier skin type.

• Skin-barrier proteins
– Mutations or polymorphisms in the filaggrin (FLG) gene, which helps form the natural moisturising factor (NMF) and maintain the stratum corneum’s barrier, are linked to increased transepidermal water loss and chronic dryness.
– Genetic variations in other barrier-related genes such as those involved in ceramide synthesis, can also contribute to having dry skin.

• Ethnic and familial patterns
– Certain populations show consistently lower sebum production or differences in lipid composition, reflecting inherited traits.
– If your parents or siblings have naturally dry, sensitive skin, you’re more likely to share that baseline.

Takeaway
While environmental factors (cold climate, harsh cleansers, aging, medications) can worsen dryness, your “default” sebum output and barrier integrity are partly hard-wired.

So...what is sugar free? What does that actually mean? Do you think that because it says "sugar free" or "zero calories" that it is safe, healthy and not going to affect your weight?
Before I continue, lets just apply some logic....consider the escalating "sugar free" BOOM over the last 50 odd years(particularly the last 20) as people became more aware of the negative effects of excess sugar in the diet on health and weight.
Now ask yourself....
1. has obesity improved or become worse than ever?
2. Has health (think lifestyle diseases ie Diabetes, CAD, Alzheimers and Cancer) improved or are they worse and more prevalent than ever before?
So how beneficial, to weight management particularly, and diseases in general is "sugar free"!?? And I ask this with tears in my eyes!
As usual, the profiteering food industry has found a way to make bigger profits on cheap, mass produced, toxic production. But selling it as "healthier" and as a "weight loss" tool while still enjoying all your favourite foods and drinks! How's that working out?
Here is some, straight off the internet, really simple to understand, effects of sucralose, for example. This information is also being shared by the very companies that profit from it, so you must know how bad it is when even THEY put out a warning, eventually.
Some, like Saccharin and Cyclamate were banned in the 70's already!
Did you know that one can of artificially sweetened soda a day can INCREASE your risk of diabetes by MORE THAN ONE THIRD!!! Do you know what Diabetes leads to? Read above! So who cares about calories? They are not the marker of health!! And health IS a marker of weight management! You can be in caloric deficit till the cows come home, STILL end up with diabetes which STILL causes weight gain due to Insulin Resistance and the cascade of endocrine disruption downstream.
There is NO HEALTHY SODA!
"Sugar free" does NOT benefit you, your weight, metabolism or health in any way whatsoever, so just stop buying it! Simple.
