Adding beauty to the heavens, keep shining wondrous soul

Farewell Tao Porchon-Lynch. The world's oldest still-active yoga teacher died today at 101.

She said "I'm going to teach yoga until I can't breathe anymore. Then I'll just fly away to the next planet".

To borrow someone else's post: When someone has lived 101 years, I don't think it's tragic when they pass, I marvel that they were able to share their passion, wisdom and touch so many lives. She lived well. She lived fully. She gave people something to aspire to beyond 80. She will be missed.

After a months holiday, my butt is in the air and my knees are on the floor ~ that is my best for now :D Never compromise your body for the pose .... Namaste

In today's episode of , we have !
1. The shoulders shouldn't dip below the elbows; stop your descent around 90 degrees. The elbows should hug in closely towards the ribs.
2. Keep the chest level with the hips as you lower your whole body.
3. Look out for the tendency to pop the hips up. That'll only add to the strain in your shoulders. If this feels too difficult, simply drop to the knees.
As usual, remember that the "Do This" variation is just ONE version of what "correct" could look like. Pay more attention to the cues rather than the exact body in the image.

We are all so desperate to be understood, that we forget to be understanding. Giving can be more uplifting than getting. Namaste

📷 On the photo: Early 1900’s, slender Indian males

🙋‍♂️ As a slender young male myself, it could be argued that many of the yoga postures today are designed for my body. But chances are, you look nothing like me or the boys in the image above, which is who a good portion of our yoga postures was designed for! Traditional yoga alignment simply was not intended for and is not suited for many of the bodies practicing yoga asana today.

🧘‍♀️ The average yoga practitioner is a middle-aged female. Do you think they are going to feel, move, or have the same structural demands as the boys pictured above? HELL NO!

📖 Many yoga postures are defended on the basis of the sacred history of the practice. In reality, most modern asana developed in the 1920s with Krishnamacharya at the Mysore Palace. Prior to this, there were other yoga postures, many to prepare the body for Lotus Pose so you could sit and meditate. I personally do not believe that a lot of modern folks have the ability (or even the need) to practice a full Lotus Pose.

🤔 What happens when we start assuming our bodies and students into shapes that do not adhere to individual alignment and structure?

How powerful! One of my precious special students closed their eyes last night after a courageous and dignified journey with cancer. Shelagh may you rest in peace and know that your beauty and love of life, friends and family will live on forever

3.9.2019: “Today is my Cancerversary. 7 years ago I opened my eyes from surgery and saw my husband ’s face. Instead of the smile I was expecting I noticed a tear rolling down his cheek. Instinctively I asked him “how did the surgery go?” As soon as he spoke I understood where his beautiful smile had gone. “Honey, you have cancer” were his words. When he spoke the words they seemed to hang in the air for a while. Then the words started to settle. Out of the air the words drifted and took a seat right in the center of my chest. We had been through so many problems with my health already. We held each other and cried. It was one of those cry’s that leaves you heaving for breath. Why me?! Why now?! My mind raced. Finally, after what seemed like forever, we started to take slow deep breaths together. Syncing our breath made it feel like we were one. Cancer had no chance at that point. Together we can do anything. Whatever Cancer wanted it could have. It couldn’t take “us” away from each other no matter what it took from me.”- Yulady Andrea Saluti
