It starts with a single bite. 🦟🚫

Remember that "puffy mosquito bite" we posted about? 🦟 Sometimes, a bite is more than just an itch. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Whether you are travelling or living in a high-risk area, keep this ABCD checklist in mind to keep your family safe from malaria.

A = Awareness: Know the risk. If you are in a malaria area, look out for flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache).

B = Bite prevention: The first line of defense is keeping them away (See our tips below 👇).

C = Chemoprophylaxis: If a doctor prescribes anti-malaria meds for your trip, make sure your child takes them exactly as directed.💊

D = Diagnosis: Time is everything. If your child has a fever after being in a malaria area, test immediately. Early diagnosis saves lives.

🦟 How to "mosquito-proof" your kids:
Smart protection: Whether you use a stick, lotion, or spray, ensure you apply a child-safe repellent to exposed skin. For extra protection, use a room spray to clear the sleeping area before bed🧴
Timing is key: Mosquitoes are hungriest between dusk and dawn. Try to keep playtimes indoors during these hours and ensure windows and doors are closed to keep the uninvited guests out! 🏠
Cover up: When the sun goes down, the long sleeves come out. Light-coloured clothing is best because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours👕
Net effect: Use mosquito nets if you are sleeping in a high-risk area. Check for holes before lights out. 🕸️
Clear the water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Check the garden and empty rainwater collected in gutters buckets, plant saucers, or toys💧🚫

Don’t let the buzz kill your summer fun. Protect your family when travelling to a malaria area.🛡️

Sleep matters for kids. Is your child getting enough Zzzs? 😴💤

Sleep isn't just "downtime". It’s recharge time for growing brains and bodies. We're turning the spotlight on the zzz's because every dream begins with a good night's sleep.

Learn the benefits of sleeping well:
💤 Boosts growth, healing and repair: Growth hormones are primarily secreted during deep sleep. Children need these hours to grow strong and healthy.

💤 Better brain function that enhances learning and concentration: A well-rested brain is primed for learning. Sleep can boost creativity and improves memory, focus and problem-solving skills vital for school success.

💤 Supports emotional well-being: Adequate sleep can improve mood, energy and overall well-being. It allows for better mood regulation and resilience, reducing tantrums and irritability.
Fosters a healthy immune system: Sleep is a natural immune booster, helping fend off bugs and keeping kids healthy.

💤 Improves behaviour: A good night's sleep can lead to better behaviour and social interactions.

According to the experts, here is the magic number for optimal health:
⏰ Ages 6-12: 9-12 hours
⏰ Ages 13-18: 8-10 hours

When kids hit these goals, they don't just feel better; they do better. From sharper memory and better choices to improved sports performance, a good night's sleep is the ultimate superpower. 🦸‍♂️

Found a mystery bump on your little one? 🧐 Don’t panic! Here is your cheat sheet to identifying and treating the most common summer bug bites.

🦟 Mosquito: Puffy, red, and itchy.
Treat: Wash with soap and water. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to stop the itch. Tip: Keep fingernails short to prevent infection from scratching!

🐕 Flea: Small red welts, usually in clusters on ankles/legs.
Treat: Wash the area immediately to lower infection risk. Use an anti-itch cream and try not to scratch. (And time to check Fido!)

🐝 Bee: Immediate sharp pain, redness, and swelling.
Treat: If the stinger is there, scrape it out with a credit card or knife. Never pinch it with tweezers (that squeezes more venom in).
Wash the area and apply ice for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.

🕷️ Spider: Two tiny puncture marks, often painful.
Treat: Clean well with soap and water. Apply an antibiotic ointment and a cool cloth. Most are harmless but keep an eye on it. If the child gets a fever or the bite turns dark and/or ulcerated, visit us immediately.

🚨 When to see a doctor: If you notice difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/lips, or if the bite area feels hot and spreads (signs of infection).

This Valentine’s Day, let’s teach our little ones that love is about so much more than just cards and candy. Fill their hearts!

At , we believe a healthy heart is a happy heart. Use our puzzle above to talk to your kids about the four pieces that make up a full heart:

✨ Connection: Spending time with the people who make us smile.
✨ Gratitude: Being thankful for the good things, big and small.

❤️ Try the heart-shaped breath:
Feeling big emotions today? Let’s breathe through them together.

1️⃣ Place your finger at the bottom point of the heart.

2️⃣ Inhale: Take a big deep breath in through your nose as you trace up the left side to the top.

🌡️ Too sick for school? Ask these 3 questions 🌡️

Deciding whether to send your child to school when they’re sick can be tricky. 🤒

With kids catching up to 12 viral illnesses a year, it’s important to know when to keep them home. Here are 3 questions to guide your decision:

1️⃣ Can they participate in school? If they’re too sick to sit in class, learn, or stop coughing, they should stay home.

2️⃣ Will they need more care than the teacher can provide? If they’re crying or uncomfortable, especially younger children, they shouldn’t be in school.

3️⃣ Are they contagious?
Ear infections and sinusitis are not contagious, so children can go to school.
Strep throat, pneumonias and pink eye (conjunctivitis) are contagious.
The flu is highly contagious. If you have the flu, stay home until you are fever-free for 24 hours.
A new rash could indicate a contagious illness like measles and warrants staying home.
Head lice are very contagious. Keep your child at home until treated.

💡 Tip: Keep them home if their fever is over 38°C, or until they’re fever-free for 24 hours. Wait 24 hours after starting antibiotics for bacterial infections such as strep throat or pneumonia.

By asking these questions and your child’s doctor, parents can make informed decisions. Because keeping your little one healthy helps protect their classmates too! 💕

Ear infections in children: What you need to know

Ear infections are very common in young children. Thankfully, most infections clear up quickly and aren’t usually serious.

The two most common types of ear infections in children are:
- Middle ear infections (otitis media)
- Outer ear infections (otitis externa)

Both types can cause ear pain, and your little one may also have cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose or sore throat.

If you think your child has an ear infection, it’s important to visit your GP. For children with frequent ear infections or hearing difficulties caused by glue ear (fluid in the middle ear), your GP might refer you to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist.

In some cases, the specialist may recommend a short procedure to insert grommets (small tubes) into your child’s ears. Grommets help drain fluid from the middle ear and can also reduce recurrent ear infections.

At Intercare Day Hospitals, procedures like grommet insertion are performed without the need for an overnight stay. Our child-friendly wards and facilities are designed to ensure your little one’s comfort and safety.

Brush up and help your kids do the same!

It's hard to get children to brush correctly, especially when they are very young. It should, however, form part of their daily routine, and they will need help and encouragement until about the age of eight.

Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and don't brush too hard to avoid damaging their gums. Daily flossing will help reach the bacteria in those tight spaces between the teeth and under the gum line, adding an extra layer of oral health care.

Develop better oral care routines for the family by brushing together, day and night, to help build habits that stick.
