It starts with a single bite. 🦟🚫
Remember that "puffy mosquito bite" we posted about? 🦟 Sometimes, a bite is more than just an itch. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Whether you are travelling or living in a high-risk area, keep this ABCD checklist in mind to keep your family safe from malaria.
A = Awareness: Know the risk. If you are in a malaria area, look out for flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache).
B = Bite prevention: The first line of defense is keeping them away (See our tips below 👇).
C = Chemoprophylaxis: If a doctor prescribes anti-malaria meds for your trip, make sure your child takes them exactly as directed.💊
D = Diagnosis: Time is everything. If your child has a fever after being in a malaria area, test immediately. Early diagnosis saves lives.
🦟 How to "mosquito-proof" your kids:
Smart protection: Whether you use a stick, lotion, or spray, ensure you apply a child-safe repellent to exposed skin. For extra protection, use a room spray to clear the sleeping area before bed🧴
Timing is key: Mosquitoes are hungriest between dusk and dawn. Try to keep playtimes indoors during these hours and ensure windows and doors are closed to keep the uninvited guests out! 🏠
Cover up: When the sun goes down, the long sleeves come out. Light-coloured clothing is best because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours👕
Net effect: Use mosquito nets if you are sleeping in a high-risk area. Check for holes before lights out. 🕸️
Clear the water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Check the garden and empty rainwater collected in gutters buckets, plant saucers, or toys💧🚫
Don’t let the buzz kill your summer fun. Protect your family when travelling to a malaria area.🛡️
