We’re proud to share that Dr Pieter Naudé, Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeon, has successfully performed a Bone Anchored Hearing System procedure at Cure Day Hospitals Bellville for the first time.

The Cochlear™ Baha® system, supplied by Southern ENT, is a minimally invasive, surgically implanted device consisting of an internal implant and an external sound processor. It works by transmitting sound through bone conduction directly to the inner ear, offering an effective solution for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss, single-sided deafness, or chronic outer and/or middle ear conditions.

This advanced system is commonly recommended for patients with:
• Conductive hearing loss
• Mixed hearing loss
• Single-sided deafness (SSD)
• Chronic ear infections that limit the use of traditional hearing aids

Introducing this specialised procedure at our facility means patients can now access advanced hearing solutions closer to home, with the quality care they trust.

"When teeth are lost and not replaced, the jawbone slowly shrinks over time. This is called severe jawbone resorption. The bone becomes thinner and shorter, and in the upper jaw the sinus spaces can expand. As a result, dentures often become loose, painful, and difficult to control. Patients may struggle to chew properly, speak clearly, or feel confident in social situations. Common causes include long-term tooth loss, gum disease, ageing, trauma, and pressure from unstable dentures that speed up bone loss over the years. Scientific studies confirm that lack of chewing forces after tooth loss leads to ongoing bone shrinkage and denture instability."

"As a dentist who treats many children, one of the most frequent questions I receive from parents regards the necessity of treating decay in primary or “baby” teeth. A common misconception is that because these teeth will eventually fall out, restorative treatment is unnecessary. In reality, the primary set of teeth play a critical role in a child’s immediate well-being and the optimal development of their permanent smile."

This March, we’re putting the focus on glaucoma — raising awareness around early detection and protecting your sight.

"78 Million people currently have glaucoma worldwide, this number is expected to rise to 112 Million by 2040 due to ageing populations. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can slowly damage your vision without any noticeable symptoms until the disease is very advanced."
