📰 Western Cape Teen Sentenced to 25 Years for Killing School Friend

A Western Cape teenager has been handed a 25-year jail sentence for the shocking murder of his school friend, Deveney Nel, whose body was found inside a storeroom at Overberg High School last year.

The tragedy sent waves of grief and anger through the community. According to court proceedings, the teen—who cannot be named as he was a minor when the crime occurred—entered a plea and sentence agreement with the state.

He admitted to killing Nel after a heated confrontation during a school sports event. The two were both members of the school’s first aid team, and he claimed they had gone to the storeroom together before the incident turned violent.

The court heard that he strangled and stabbed her before trying to hide the body and mislead police by getting rid of his cellphone.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed he received an additional one-year sentence for attempting to obstruct justice, which will run concurrently.
