April is Health Awareness Month, with the 7th of April raising awareness about the overall health and well-being of people across the world.

So, keeping in mind the theme of health and our previous post about stretching let’s have a look at another aspect of keeping your body healthy.

Strength training:

Strength training involves any type of movement or exercise that involves one’s own body weight, equipment to build muscle mass, endurance, or strength. Modes of training can include all types of training such as body weight training, circuit or HIIT training, or lifting weights.

Strength training -

•Improves your ability to do everyday activities and decreases the risk of falls
• Increases metabolism.
•Aids in decreasing abdominal fat therefore helping with managing or losing weight
•Enhances your quality of life, also improving the health of your heart
•Aids in protecting your joints from injury

❗️WHY WE STRETCH?
Stretching promotes -
* mobility
* flexibility
* Stretching keeps the muscles healthy and strong.

A regular stretching regime incorporated
into your every day -
* Aids with injury prevention
* corrects posture,
* improves daily functions
* prevents injuries.

Pre-activity warm up and stretches helps to reduce the muscular strains and tears form sudden over-lengthening,
muscular spasms, relieve stiffness and enhance circulation (Mattes, 1996).

_Active isolating stretches_
Refers to a technique that promotes the
effectiveness of stretching without causing a lot of discomfort that make us want to avoid stretches!
Active isolating stretches involves 4 basic
principles:
1. Isolating the muscles that is being stretched.
2. Repeating the action 8 to 10 times
3. Holding the stretch for no longer than 2
seconds
4. Exhaling on the stretch and inhale on the release of the stretch

?How does isolating a muscle help a muscle stretch?
By actively contracting the opposite muscle, the targeted muscle relaxes and provides the perfect environment to stretch. By repeating the action, it
helps to increase circulation in the blood, more oxygen and nutrients to the muscle being stretched.

What is Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month?

💕February is not just the month of loving the people in your life but also loving yourself. 
On February the 16th we celebrate Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day, and this day addresses the dangers of obesity caused by risk factors such as an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. 
The goal of Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month is to promote health and well being of individuals.

Let's meet the team -

📣 Meet Claudia Griessel, biokineticist at van Der Merwe Biokineticists.

How it all started:
• Claudia's passion for Bio started in highschool. She then went on and studied at the North-West University completing her BA. Health Sciences degree, followed by completing her BHSc in Biokinetics at the University of Witwatersrand. Claudia started with the van Der Merwe team in the beginning of 2021.

A little more about Claudia:
• Claudia loves people, the outdoors, sport and helping others to reach their full potential. She loves working with young athletes and children helping them to better themselves, improve their skills and reach their potential. She is also very fond of her older patients, hearing their stories and watching them grow in strength.

🌿 Where can you find Claudia if she is not in the Practice?
• Most of the time Claudia can be found somewhere outdoors either spending time with friends or driving through the bush taking photos of animals and nature.

📣Meet Vicky van Der Merwe the founder and owner of van Der Merwe Biokineticists.

How it all started:

* Vicky studied at the North-West University completing her BSc degree in Human Movement Science and Nutrition Cum Laude in 2009. During her internship year Vicky also completed her MSc. in Biokinetics and has been working as a passionate Biokineticist ever since. Every year since Vicky’s love for her occupation has just grown, never backing away from any challenge, and sharing her love for what she does everywhere she goes.

🏃🏻‍♀️A little bit more about Vicky:
* As a competitive runner herself Vicky is a role model of hard work and commitment. Vicky’s enthusiasm and positivity is contagious, bringing love and care into every one of her sessions. She believes in providing solutions for moving better, using the correct exercise modalities to reach full functionality and pain free potential.

* Vicky’s areas of expertise are athletes, geriatrics, and special population patients.

Where to find Vicky if she is not in the Practice:
* Vicky can either be found among her friends and family sharing in some good wine and food.

What is Biokinetics and how can it help you?

Biokinetics is a recognized health care profession that uses exercise and movement to rehabilitate, promote wellness and improve the health of our patients. Biokinetics deals with the final phase of rehabilitation or wellness, the phase that usually takes place after you’ve seen your doctor, physiotherapist, chiropractor, or dietician who focuses more acutely on solving your ailment.

Biokineticists are qualified and specialized exercise therapists with a background in anatomy and physiology, giving us a deeper understanding of how the body works and moves.

Biokinetics also includes chronic disease management, exercise prescription and guidelines for chronic illnesses, as well as the improvement and promotion of your general wellness, such as healthy lifestyle changes, exercise routines, and stress management.

Our treatment will include some or all of the following: improving your biomechanics, correcting movement patterns, bettering your flexibility, strengthening weaknesses and improving your posture. We also take the time to educate each person so that they have a better understanding of your body and movement. Each patient is given an individualized program that focuses on their needs and goals.

🧠National Stroke Week.

Ending national Stroke week with some information to try help you understand Stroke a little better and how we as Biokineticists can help you.

❕A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident, is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or bleeds, or when there is a blockage in the blood supply to the brain.

‼️Causes:

- A blocked artery (Ischemic stroke). 87% of all strokes
- Leaking or ruptured blood vessel (Hemorrhagic stroke)
- Some people experience a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain (Transient Ischemic Attack, TIA)

‼️Risk factors:

There are two types of risk factors modifiable and non-modifiable:

· Non-modifiable risks are those you cannot change such as, age, gender, race, and family history.
· Modifiable risks are those you can change whether by means of lifestyle changes, such as: Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, lack of exercise, obesity, or stress. Or by medical intervention such as: hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease or stress.

‼️Signs and Symptoms:

We use the acronym F.A.S.T

F – Facial drooping

A – Arm weakness

S – Speech difficulties

And then to remember

T- Time … is of the essence. Act fast, record symptoms

❔So how can we as Biokineticists help you?

❕We as exercise specialists use movement/exercise as our main form of treatment, to improve your modifiable risks and/or improve your state of life after a stroke.

🫀Exercise

· decreases your blood pressure, reducing the pressure on your blood vessels therefore decreasing the risk of a stroke
· aids in weight loss
· helps decrease stress
· strengthens muscles
· increases range of motion
· improves activities of daily living

🧬As we are nearing the end of the global week for action of NCD’s we have decided to branch out and help share some awareness on what these are and how Biokinetics can help.

🧬NCD’s are Non-Communicable Diseases, meaning diseases that are known as noninfectious diseases and cannot be transferred from one person to another. There are four major categories of NCD’s; Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes, Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Cancer, and these are responsible for almost 70% of deaths worldwide.

🧬As Biokineticist’s our primary aim is to improve physical functioning and health through movement and exercise. Monitoring symptoms, prescribing the right way to exercises and educating patients on how to mange their disease.
