I realized that most of the things we post on our social media platform are for people who might be in need of psychological services, but felt this need to post something for the psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, creative arts therapists and actually any healthcare worker who needs to do the work each day. Because no, psychology is not just another job.
Here's a few reminders or things I think you should know if you are a therapist of any sorts yourself:
1. You are allowed to care about your clients. Yes we need boundaries, but I think sometimes we are made to feel that it is totally unprofessional, when really it is just human.
2. It is okay if you do not have all of the answers that your clients may need. You are the expert, and they are coming to you for assistance, but that sometimes means that you also know it is not about them getting answers but rather about them getting the experience that they might need relationally.
3. Your relationship with your client is what matters most. I firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important thing. It is professional in nature, with boundaries, but you can have all the skills in the world, without a relationship it won't mean much.
4. You don't have to be the perfect therapist, you just need to be good-enough. I don't think people realize how much pressure therapists experience to try and be exactly what each and every client you see needs you to be. A supervisor once told me, if you are good-enough, you won't ruin their experience of therapy, and worst case scenario they will land up with a different therapist, but still get the help they need.
5. YOU are your greatest tool in therapy, more than any skill. Yes it is super useful to aquire skills and continue to develop yourself professionally, however when you get stuck, return to this, how can I use myself in this therapy process?
All my best,
