Finding Your Words Again After a Stroke

A stroke can cause aphasia, a language disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write — but not their intelligence. Imagine knowing exactly what you want to say, but not being able to get the words out.

A Speech Therapist supports people with aphasia by tailoring therapy to each individual’s needs — helping rebuild language skills, teaching alternative communication strategies, and empowering families to communicate effectively.

With patience, practice, and support, communication can improve. This World Stroke Day, let’s recognise the vital role of speech therapy in helping survivors find their voice again.

When Speech Becomes Difficult After a Stroke

After a stroke, some people experience dysarthria — a speech disorder caused by muscle weakness or poor coordination. Speech may sound slurred, slow, or soft, and communication can feel frustrating.

A Speech Therapist works closely with stroke survivors to strengthen the muscles used for speech, improve breath support, and develop clear and confident communication. Therapy focuses not only on clarity of speech, but also on restoring confidence and social connection.

Because communication is more than just words — it’s how we stay connected to others.

Eating and Drinking Safely Again After a Stroke

A stroke can affect the brain’s control over the muscles we use to chew and swallow — a condition known as dysphagia. This can make eating and drinking difficult or even dangerous, increasing the risk of choking or pneumonia.

A Speech Therapist plays a vital role in assessing swallowing function and helping patients return to safe, comfortable eating. Through specialised exercises, texture modification, and strategies to improve muscle coordination, we support recovery and help restore one of life’s simplest pleasures — enjoying a meal safely.

Let’s raise awareness this World Stroke Day of how early speech therapy intervention can make a life-changing difference in recovery and quality of life. 💪🍽️

Did you know that Speech Therapists can assist patients who have had a stroke? Here's three ways how we can help:

1. Regaining Communication Skills

A stroke can affect the brain’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write. Speech Therapists help retrain these skills so individuals can express themselves and reconnect with loved ones.

2. Improving Speech and Clarity

Weakness or incoordination of the speech muscles can make speech slurred or unclear (dysarthria). Speech therapy focuses on strengthening these muscles and improving breath support and pronunciation.

3. Restoring Safe Swallowing

Many people experience swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) after a stroke. Speech Therapists assess swallowing safety, recommend suitable textures, and teach exercises to reduce the risk of choking or aspiration.

Speech Therapists can assist with breastfeeding. Here's how:

🌿 1. Oral Motor Assessment:
Speech Therapists are trained to assess the structure and function of a baby’s mouth, tongue, jaw, and palate. We can identify issues like tongue tie, high palate, or weak suck, which may affect latching and feeding.

🌿 2. Supporting Suck-Swallow-Breathe Coordination:
Effective breastfeeding relies on a baby’s ability to suck, swallow, and breathe in a coordinated way. Speech Therapists specialize in feeding development and can help babies who struggle with this pattern — especially premature infants or babies with medical conditions.

🌿 3. Feeding Position and Technique Support:
SLPs can work alongside lactation consultants to offer individualized guidance on positioning, pacing, and latching techniques, especially when feeding challenges are rooted in neuromuscular or sensory issues.

🌿 4. Sensory Processing and Arousal Regulation:
Some babies may struggle with breastfeeding due to sensory sensitivities or difficulties with state regulation (e.g., staying calm and alert enough to feed). Speech Therapists can help with strategies to improve sensory comfort and readiness for feeding.

🌿 5. Multidisciplinary Support for Complex Cases:
In babies with conditions like cleft palate, neurological disorders, or prematurity, SLPs play a key role in a multidisciplinary team, supporting not just speech and language, but safe and effective feeding — starting from the breast if possible.

Breastfeeding Awareness Week:

Did you know?
Speech-Language Therapists play a critical role in the NICU — starting from day one.

Early intervention by a Speech Therapist can support safe feeding, successful breastfeeding, and even help prevent long-term speech and communication delays.

For premature or medically fragile babies, feeding isn't just about nutrition — it's a complex coordination of suck, swallow, and breathe. That’s where Speech Therapists come in.

We help with:
- Oral-motor skills for feeding
- Positioning
- Breastfeeding support
- Coaching families to connect and communicate from the start.

Feeding is the foundation for later speech, language, and bonding.

🔍 Research shows that NICU infants receiving early feeding support from SLPs reach full oral feeds sooner and are more likely to exclusively breastfeed at discharge — setting the stage for better developmental outcomes.
We are here to support families every step of the way.
