The Bryan Gosling story - Told by his wife Christine Gosling
Goose had a wake boarding accident on 31 Dec 2011. Unfortunately he didn't see a fibre glass ramp in the water during one of his trick performances. He hit this ramp head first at about 50km,he was unconscious immediately...
We rushed him to the Bronkhorstspruit Netcare Hospital where he was stabilised and then airlifted to Milpark Hospital. We were told that he had a very small chance of surviving. He was very close to death and had a severe head injury. The next 24 hours were crucial. Bryan was in ICU for three and a half months, 2 and a half of these months he was in a coma. In Milpark Bryan had 7 operations to repair his broken jaw, his broken elbow, put a pipe into his throat to help him breathe and another pipe into his stomach to ensure he could get food because he couldn't swallow. In the middle of the third month after the accident Bryan started showing signs of recognising people and responding to requests like "show me a thumbs up". After 4 months in Milpark we moved Bryan to the Netcare Rehab Centre in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. This would be Bryan's "home" for the next 4 months. Here in the rehab Bryan learnt how to hold his head up (literally), he learnt how to swallow and ate food for the first time in 5 months. He learnt to control his muscles in his body. He had 2 physio sessions, one speech therapy session and one occupational therapy session per day. Throughout his stay in rehab Bryan learnt how to deal with this new body he was in. He also learnt how to communicate through his word board. We were so happy when Bryan could finally come home for weekends. Bryan and I moved into a friends flat for a year so that he could attend therapy sessions as an outpatient. He went for speech, physio and OT every day; and other therapies such as walking on the Lokomat and Neurotherapy were also included. Bryan also saw a psychologist to help him adjust to this new life. After 2 years of full time therapy we moved back to the farm. When we asked him what he missed most about the farm he said the space. Bryan loves the farm and the farm offers him so many opportunities. Bryan worked so hard at getting better. He put his all into it. By 2015 Bryan had healed to a point where we made a decision that such intense therapy was no longer necessary and that he could carry on with normal life and then just have therapies at a wonderful place called Rehab Matters in Johannesburg every Friday. I would like to give all the honour and glory of Bryan's recovery to God. Jesus walked with us every day of this journey and I believe He has a very specific purpose for Bryan's life. Medical aid expenses for Bryan range between R23500.00 and R31500.00 per month. Christine and Goose
