☕ You're probably drinking coffee wrong.
Not the brand. Not the roast. The timing.

Most people pour their first cup within 15 minutes of waking up — and without knowing it, they're sabotaging the very energy they're chasing.

Here's the counterintuitive science:

Your body already releases a natural cortisol surge in the morning. It's your built-in wake-up system. When you layer caffeine on top of that peak, you don't amplify it — you blunt it.
Both signals weaken.
Your coffee hits less.
Your crash hits sooner.

The fix is embarrassingly simple: wait 90 minutes.

Let cortisol do its job. Then use caffeine to extend it. More buzz. Less crash. No expensive upgrades required.

In this episode of the Workplace Wellness series, I break down: → The biology of why your 7AM coffee is working against you → The real reason you're crashing at 3PM → Why energy drinks are caffeine's "chaotic cousin" → A short, practical protocol to make caffeine a performance tool — not a lifeline → And why being always tired isn't a caffeine problem

Caffeine is like investing. Used wisely, it compounds your energy. Used recklessly, it drains your reserves. Most of us are over-leveraged and wondering why we're bankrupt by Thursday.

That 3PM Productivity Crash - It’s Not Motivation.

You know the drill. It’s 3PM.

Your brain has officially left the building.

You’ve reread the same sentence four times.
You’re clicking between tabs like a caffeinated squirrel.
Your productivity has entered what we might politely call… a strategic pause.

Sound familiar?

Most organisations assume the 3PM crash is a motivation problem.

It’s not.

It’s a metabolism problem.

After lunch — especially the quick “chicken mayo on white bread and a fizzy drink” variety — blood sugar spikes… and then drops like a bad stock pick.

Add the natural cortisol dip between 2–4PM, and suddenly half your workforce is operating at reduced cognitive capacity.

Which raises an interesting leadership question:

👉 If we optimise financial performance…
👉 If we optimise operational efficiency…

Why are we not optimising human energy?

Because the reality is simple:

• Stable blood sugar = stable focus
• Movement = better cognitive performance
• Hydration = sharper thinking

Sometimes the most powerful productivity strategy isn’t another meeting or another motivational quote.

It’s metabolic stability.

In the video below I explain:

• Why the 3PM crash happens
• The simple lunch mistake most professionals make
• The 10-minute habit that dramatically improves afternoon focus

Because when people fuel properly, move their bodies and manage stress…

They don’t just survive the workday.

They perform at their best.

Always so much to be proud of about Cape Town. And today we’ve got another reason.

A city that works hard…
and knows how to play hard too. 🚴‍♂️

Your 3PM crash isn’t burnout.

It’s a caffeine mistake most professionals make before 7am.

In this short video I break down something most people get wrong within minutes of waking up - and it quietly sabotages their energy for the rest of the day.

It involves caffeine, cortisol, and a tiny molecule called adenosine that basically decides when your brain wants to quit.

Fix this one habit and you can dramatically reduce the afternoon slump most professionals accept as “normal.” One small timing change can fix it.

A few things you’ll learn in the video:

• The simple 90-minute rule that changes how caffeine works in your body
• The hydration mistake that quietly wrecks focus and mood
• Why your lunch might be running a blood-sugar demolition derby

If you’ve ever hit that 3pm wall…
this one might be worth a few minutes of your time.

Every second counts. Every life matters.

https://zurl.co/7IyCn

This powerful video from the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust highlights the reality faced daily in one of Africa’s most iconic public hospitals, where world-class care meets overwhelming demand.

Behind every emergency arrival is a person, a family, a future hanging in the balance. And while the dedication of healthcare professionals is extraordinary, the need for modern facilities, equipment, and resources is urgent.

The Trust exists to bridge that gap - enabling private funding for critical needs that fall beyond operational budgets, so that pioneering, life-saving care remains possible for everyone who depends on Groote Schuur Hospital.

This campaign reminds us that public healthcare is not someone else’s responsibility, it’s all of ours.

Please consider supporting the Trust. Your contribution helps transform lives - one patient, one family, one moment at a time.

Build Mental Muscle and unlock six pack resilience

Most men would rather deadlift a small car than talk about their feelings. But here’s the uncomfortable truth - your brain is a muscle too, and if you don’t train it, it atrophies (shrivels / withers / goes flabby). Mental health isn’t just about avoiding breakdowns; it’s about building mental fitness - the strength, endurance, and resilience to handle life without self-destructing (or binge-watching YouTube at 2 a.m. in a niknaks-stained hoodie).

So what actually works? The science is clear: two interventions stand head and shoulders above the rest.

1. Physical Training for your Mind

We know that exercise makes you ripped (or at least less dad-bod-ish). But here’s the kicker: it’s the most potent antidepressant and anti-anxiety drug we’ve got, and it’s free.

The Science: Exercise triggers a neurochemical fireworks show - endorphins, dopamine, BDNF (basically fertilizer for your brain). Meta-analyses show it’s as effective as medication to manage mild to moderate depression.

The Habit Hack: Forget two-hour gym marathons. Do 20 minutes of something that leaves you sweaty and slightly humbled. Push-ups in your living room, sprints, even kettlebell swings in your garage. Consistency beats intensity.

Think of it as strength training for your head, not just your biceps.

2. Connection: The Testosterone-Friendly Therapy

Therapy doesn’t have to mean crying in a beige office while someone nods at you. For men, the real unlock is connection - friendships that go deeper than “how was that Bok whipping against Argentina?”

The Science: Loneliness literally shortens lifespan. Social connection lowers cortisol (stress hormone), improves immune function, and buffers against depression.

The Habit Hack: Start small. Call one mate and suggest a workout, a walk, or even a shared coffee ritual. Or join something that forces regular interaction – padel / a regular game of touch (rugby!!!) / a weekly cycling group (mine’s full). Think of it as emotional CrossFit.

The gains are in showing up, not baring your soul like it’s Oprah.

There are also a few micro-Habits that move the needle…

Sleep like it matters. Skip the energy drinks (you know the crash is coming) – keep it consistent and guard your 7 to 9 hours like it’s the remote when the game’s about to start.

Swap scrolling for stillness. Five minutes of mindfulness isn’t “woo-woo” - it’s neurological weightlifting.

Men, we pride ourselves on being “tough.” But real toughness isn’t white-knuckling through burnout. It’s training your brain the same way you train your body - with reps, with discipline, and with a crew that’s got your back.

So yes, lift heavy. Call your mates. That’s how you toughen up the right way!

Breaking "news" : Taking paracetamol in pregnancy causes autism, according to President Trump.

Here’s the problem: science doesn’t agree. Not even close.

The biggest and best study to date — a Swedish sibling-control trial following nearly 2.5 million children — found no link between prenatal paracetamol use and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability. Why does the sibling-control design matter? Because it cancels out the genetics and shared environment that so often muddy observational studies. It’s the gold standard of real-world epidemiology.

Now here’s the kicker: the very authors of the study Trump’s team waved around as “evidence” have gone on record saying the data is inconclusive and nowhere near strong enough to claim causation.

So, in other words… this isn’t science. It’s politics in a lab coat.

Yes, the FDA is moving to update warning labels to reflect that some studies suggest possible associations, but they’re also crystal clear: causation has not been established.

Let’s be clear: paracetamol remains the safest pain and fever option in pregnancy when used responsibly. The risks of untreated fever in pregnancy are far more real than the goose Trump is chasing.

So when bad science is spun into soundbites, we need to push back, or else we risk eroding trust in the very tools that keep moms and babies safe.

Science > soundbites. Always.

The Statin Plot Twist Nobody’s Talking About

Statins are the world’s #1 prescription drug.
They’ve saved countless lives. They’re in every doctor’s toolkit.

But here’s the curveball: A growing body of research suggests they may also quietly interfere with the same GLP-1 pathways that Ozempic and Wegovy are built on.

Translation?
The pill protecting your arteries might also be nudging your metabolism in the wrong direction — raising insulin resistance, lowering GLP-1, and possibly increasing diabetes risk.

This isn’t fringe science. It was published in one of the world’s top journals. Over a year ago. And yet… most clinicians still don’t know.

This doesn’t make statins bad. But it does highlight a blind spot in how we think about medicine:
We treat the heart.
We treat cholesterol.
We treat symptoms.
But metabolism doesn’t play by those rules. It’s one big, interconnected web.

So what do we do?
If you’re on statins: don’t panic. Do ask better questions. About metabolic health, insulin resistance, long-term strategy — not just cholesterol.

Because in the end… medicine isn’t checkers.
It’s chess.
