Prematurity, or preterm birth, is defined as a baby born alive before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Full-term pregnancy is typically 40 weeks. The earlier in the pregnancy a baby is born, the more serious the potential health risks and the more likely they are to require specialized medical care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

🧠 World Stroke Day | 29 October 🧠
Today we raise awareness about Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVAs), commonly known as strokes, a leading cause of disability worldwide. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, leading to brain cell damage.

⏰ Remember: Act FAST!
• Face drooping
• Arm weakness
• Speech difficulty
• Time to get help immediately!

‼️ How to prevent stroke:
• Take your blood pressure medication as prescribed
• Get regular check-ups
• Manage your cholesterol
• Eat a heart-healthy diet, reducing fats and salts
• Exercise regularly
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Quit smoking
• Limit alcohol intake

Recovery after a stroke takes a team effort 💪
👨‍⚕️ Doctors: diagnose and manage medical treatment
👩‍⚕️ Nurses: provide ongoing care and monitoring
🏃‍♀️ Physiotherapists: help restore movement, balance, and strength
✋ Occupational Therapists: assist with regaining daily living skills
🗣️ Speech Therapists: support communication and swallowing rehabilitation
🥗 Dieticians: promote healthy eating to aid recovery and prevent recurrence

At Dr. Harry Surtie Hospital, our Allied team work together during our Neuro Clinic (every Thursday), where a stroke survivor can receive assistance from the whole rehab team on the same day. We take pride in the positive outcomes we've seen through this initiative and continue to make improvements to ensure better outcomes for all.

Together, we can help stroke survivors regain independence and improve quality of life. ❤️

🌍💚World Occupational Therapy Day 2025 - OT in Action 💚🌍

Today, we celebrate World Occupational Therapy Day. This year’s theme, “OT in Action”, beautifully captures what we do every day in our department.

As Occupational Therapists, we work with individuals across all ages and abilities to help them participate fully in the activities that give their lives meaning.

At our hospital, we’re proud to support a diverse group of patients, from children with cerebral palsy and autism, to adults recovering from amputations, neurological conditions, hand injuries, and those learning to use wheelchairs. Each day, we witness incredible resilience and determination as our patients work towards independence and a better quality of life.

Occupational Therapy is more than rehabilitation. It’s about empowering people to do the things that matter most to them, whether that’s playing, learning, working, or simply living with confidence and dignity.

Here’s to celebrating OT in Action, helping people live life to the fullest, one meaningful step at a time. 💪💫

10 October - World Mental Health Day💚

Mental health is just as important as physical health. It impacts how we think, feel and engage in daily life.

Hear from one of our Occupational Therapists, on the importance of mental health:

"As an Occupational Therapist, I see how mental well-being affects everything from self-care to work and relationships.
Sadly, stigma still prevents many people from seeking support. It’s time we normalize mental health conversations and recognize that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness."

Let’s break the stigma and support each other in living balanced, meaningful lives.

There is no health without mental health.💚
