Violence, poverty, and gender-based violence (GBV) are not separate crises — they are deeply intertwined and together form the roots of South Africa’s mental health emergency.

🩸 Violence and crime cost our economy 10% of its GDP every year.
💰 40% of South Africans live below the poverty line.
💔 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence — often from someone they know.

These realities create cycles of fear, stress, and trauma that impact mental well-being across generations.
But here’s the truth: violence is not inevitable.

Together, we can build stronger, safer, and more compassionate communities — where healing and hope take root. 🌱

ACCESS TO CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT.

In South Africa, over 1 in 10 people live with a mental health condition — yet 92% never receive the care they need.
With only 5% of our national health budget going toward mental health, many are left without support, especially those in under-resourced or rural communities.
Access to mental health services should not depend on where you live, what you earn, or who you are.

📢 This , let’s call for affordable, accessible, and culturally responsive care for all.

💚 Because mental health isn’t a luxury — it’s a human right.

Living in high-crime areas doesn’t just affect safety — it impacts mental wellbeing.

🧠 Constant fear and stress increase the risk of depression and anxiety.

We need investment in community safety AND mental health services to build healthier futures.

Poverty doesn’t just impact wallets — it impacts mental health.

➡️ 40% of South Africans live below the poverty line.
➡️ 6 in 10 young people are multidimensionally poor.

Breaking the cycle of poverty means ensuring mental health services are accessible in every community.

🌍 Today is World Mental Health Day.

This year’s theme: Access to Mental Health Services in Catastrophes and Emergencies.
In South Africa, we face a pressing challenge: 92% of people living with a mental health condition do not receive the care they need.

Let’s break the silence, fight for better access, and support each other. 💚

‼️ 1 in 3 South African women has experienced physical violence.

⚠️ Survivors of GBV are at higher risk of depression, PTSD, substance use, and even suicidal thoughts.

➡️ Stigma keeps too many from reaching out for help.

✅ Survivors deserve safety, healing, and mental health support.

🆘 Violence is more than crime statistics — it is a public health emergency.

➡️R129 billion: the annual cost of violence in SA.
➡️34 homicides per 100,000 people: one of the highest rates globally.
➡️Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community affected.

It’s time to see violence not only as a justice issue — but as a mental health crisis.
