Scoliosis is, simply put, a sideways curvature of the spine.
When looking at one’s back from behind, the spine should be straight from the tailbone to the head. Scoliosis causes the spine to lean to one side or to curve in an “S” shape. This usually starts in children and young teens but can be found in younger children and adults.

Scoliosis can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the degree of the curve. If found early enough, progression of the curve can often be slowed or prevented. Treatment for scoliosis involves relieving muscle imbalances through soft tissue therapy, as well as rehabilitative exercises and postural advice. Moderate scoliosis may also require bracing. Most scoliosis curves start in children aged 10-12. If you want your child to be checked for scoliosis, visit your local chiropractor.
