Cabotegravir (aka CAB LA) FAQ:
☑️Why do I need to test for HIV before accessing CAB LA?
For PrEP drugs, it is important that one is HIV negative to take the drug. This is to avoid resistance to the actual HIV treatment should one be found positive.
☑️How long do I need to take the injection?
PrEP medication is meant to use for as long as one is at risk of acquiring the HIV infection. There’s no need of you taking it if you are no longer at risk. CAB-LA is taken every after 2 months, following an initial monthly initiation of 2 or 1 monthly doses depending on your doctor or Pharmacist’s decision.
☑️ Where can I find CAB-LA?
Just like the regular ARVs, it is being rolled out in Government facilities. Currently in Africa, it is being rolled out in some parts of Zambia, namely Chibombo and Mazabuka districts. It has been approved in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
It is also being used in America and Europe. While in it is being sold in a few parts, it is free in Africa.
☑️How do I access CAB-LA?
If you are at risk of acquiring HIV infection, go to your nearest facility offering CAB-LA. In Zambia, it’s currently being given in Chibombo and Mazabuka in a few government facilities. Find out which facilities are offering this drug in your area and you will be attended to further. Please note that the oral PrEP is still being given at almost all government clinics or hospitals.
