As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the statistics are stark. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases diagnosed every year, resulting in approximately 685,000 deaths annually.
In light of these numbers, routine testing is more crucial than ever. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives. We urge all women to prioritize their breast health and get screened regularly. Let's work together to raise awareness and promote early detection.

Admin spotted another Mr. Okada 🏍
We know you love living life in the fast lane, the wind in your hair, the roar of your engine, and that heroic skide into the hospital parking lot. But Pulizi🤣 , let’s keep the emergency area for actual emergencies🚨🚑, not for “I just needed to grab Panadol real quick.”

Typhoid fever is a serious and potentially life-threatening illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It is a significant public health concern in many parts of the world, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. The disease is usually spread through contaminated food or water, or through close contact with someone who is infected.

If left untreated, typhoid fever can lead to serious complications, such as intestinal perforation, internal bleeding, and even death. The symptoms of typhoid fever can vary but typically include fever that can last for several days or even weeks, headache, fatigue, and weakness, abdominal pain and tenderness, loss of appetite and weight loss, and rash.

Preventing typhoid fever requires a combination of good hygiene practices, safe food and water habits, and vaccination. Ensuring access to safe and clean drinking water is crucial, and drinking boiled or treated water is recommended. Practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food, and after using the toilet, is also essential.

When it comes to food, it is crucial to ensure that it is cooked thoroughly and handled safely. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat, seafood, or eggs, and wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating. Getting vaccinated against typhoid fever is also a good idea, especially if you are traveling to areas where the disease is common or if you work in a high-risk environment.

Avoiding close contact with someone who is infected with typhoid fever can help prevent the spread of the disease. If you suspect someone has typhoid fever, seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes. By taking the necessary precautions and being aware of the risks, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from this potentially life-threatening disease.

October is breast cancer awareness month

•1 in 8 women. 👩
That’s not just a number.
That’s your mom.
Your sister.
Your grandma.
Your aunt.
Your best friend.
Every 2 minutes, a woman hears the words,
“You have breast cancer.”
And every 13 minutes, a family loses someone they love to breast cancer.
In Zambia, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality after cervical cancer, with an estimated incidence of 19.9 cases per 100,000 women and a mortality rate of 8.5 deaths per 100,000 women. Most patients with breast cancer in Zambia are diagnosed at advanced stages, resulting in limited treatment options and high mortality rates. A study found that 60% of women presented with late-stage disease, highlighting the need for early detection and diagnosis.
An encouragement to our women let’s visit our doctor for routine screening of breast cancer.♋️

______________________________________________
As the hot season sets in, mosquito activity tends to increase, posing a significant risk of malaria transmission. Female mosquitoes are the primary vectors of malaria, and their bites can lead to the spread of this life-threatening disease. During this period, it is essential to take proactive measures to prevent malaria transmission and ensure prompt treatment.
Malaria symptoms can vary in severity, but common signs include high fever, body weakness, and vomiting. These symptoms can develop rapidly, often within a few days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. If left untreated, malaria can lead to severe complications, including organ failure and even death.

Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets is one of the most effective ways to prevent malaria. These nets provide a protective barrier against mosquito bites, reducing the risk of transmission. It is also crucial to report any symptoms related to malaria to the nearest health facility promptly. Healthcare facilities are equipped to diagnose malaria through laboratory tests and provide effective treatment. Prompt medical attention can significantly improve outcomes and save lives.

By taking proactive measures and working together, we can mitigate the impact of malaria during the hot season and beyond. Effective prevention and treatment strategies can help protect individuals and communities, ultimately reducing the risk of malaria transmission and promoting better health outcomes.

The PEN-Plus Initiative Enhanced Cardiac Care through Echocardiography Training
___________________________________________
The PEN-Plus initiative implemented a comprehensive training program that equipped healthcare workers with essential echocardiography skills, focusing on the diagnosis and management of cardiac conditions, particularly rheumatic heart disease and heart failure. The program's primary objectives were to train healthcare professionals, including doctors, clinical officers, nurses, and sonographers, in basic and intermediate echocardiography skills, standardize protocols for echo imaging, and foster team-based learning.
The training program commenced with theoretical sessions that covered the basics of cardiac anatomy and physiology, principles of ultrasound and echocardiography, and common pathologies such as valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, and congenital heart disease. Participants gained a deeper understanding of echo views, including parasternal long axis, short axis, apical 4-chamber, and subcostal views.
Hands-on training was a crucial component of the program, where participants learned probe placement, image optimization, and Doppler use for valve assessment. Case-based practice with real patients enabled participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, developing their critical thinking skills.
The program emphasized the importance of teamwork in patient care, defining specific roles for nurses, clinical officers, and doctors. Nurses were responsible for patient preparation, vitals, and documentation, while clinical officers and doctors focused on image acquisition and interpretation. Mentorship and feedback loops ensured that participants received guidance and support throughout the training process.
Participants underwent a rigorous assessment process, including skills checklists, case presentations, and practical demonstrations. Upon completion, they received certification, recognizing their proficiency in echocardiography.
The program's implementation plan focused on integrating echo into PEN-Plus clinic flow, task-sharing, and team roles. Monitoring outcomes, such as RHD follow-up registries, helped track the program's effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
By providing healthcare workers with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform and interpret echocardiograms accurately, the PEN-Plus initiative enhanced cardiac care at the district hospital level. Standardized protocols and team-based learning ensured that patients received high-quality care, and the program's impact was sustained over time.
