For all who come within the sphere of his influence perceive the beauty and fragrance of his Christian life, while he himself is unconscious of it, for it is in harmony with his habits and inclinations. He prays for divine light, and loves to walk in that light. It is his meat and drink to do the will of his heavenly Father. His life is hid with Christ in God; yet he does not boast of this, nor seem conscious of it.

Ophthalmia neonatorum refers to eye inflammation occurring within the first 28 days of life.
It is one of the leading preventable causes of blindness in newborns, and early recognition is key to saving sight.

🦠 Causes

Infection occurs when the baby’s eyes are contaminated during delivery through an infected birth canal or due to poor hygiene after birth.
The main organisms include: Neisseria gonorrhoeae → Gonococcal conjunctivitis (most severe), Chlamydia trachomatis → Chlamydial conjunctivitis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

⚠️ Risk Factors

Mother with untreated STIs (especially gonorrhea or chlamydia)

Premature rupture of membranes

Poor delivery hygiene or use of contaminated instruments

Lack of eye prophylaxis after birth

👀 Clinical Features

Eye redness and swollen eyelids

Sticky discharge (mucopurulent or purulent)

Eyelids stuck together, especially after sleep

Corneal ulceration or perforation (in severe untreated gonococcal cases)

Blindness in advanced cases

🧪 Investigations

Gram stain and culture of eye discharge → identify bacteria

Giemsa stain or PCR for Chlamydia trachomatis

Maternal STI screening (vaginal/urethral swab)

Conjunctival scraping if persistent

🛡️ Prevention

Screen and treat all pregnant women for STIs.

Apply prophylactic antibiotic eye ointment (e.g. 1% tetracycline or erythromycin) to all newborns after delivery.

Maintain clean delivery practices.

Educate mothers on hygiene and prompt medical care for any eye discharge.
