Zambia today can record the reduction in maternal neonatal deaths and improved post-natal health care because in 2002, Youth Cultural Promotion Association (YOCUPA) implemented the Theatre for Community Action performances which ushered to Zambia the first ever Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) MODEL which was innovated by Dr. Beck Banda the Founder and Executive Director of YOCUPA. Today, Over 40 organisations in Zambia including the UN Agencies, government Ministries, International NGOs and local NGOs have adopted the SMAGs model and it has empirical scientific evidence of being the best practice in addressing maternal neonatal health issues.
