Sweet potato is another crops that's very easy to steal from you.

- A day before 'market day' its when you must be very alert for thieves.

- Sweet potato is easy to cook, and thus even children steal it.

- They not only steal the roots but the vines as well.

Farmers, Timing is Everything in Agriculture.

If you are planting rain-fed sweet potatoes, your practical deadline is March 10. Why does this date matter?

Sweet potatoes need at least 3–4 weeks of good rainfall after planting to establish properly. In most parts of Zambia, the rains usually begin tapering off between mid and late April as we move toward the cold season in May.

Here’s the strategy many experienced growers understand:
• Plant before March 10
• Allow the crop to benefit from the last meaningful rains
• As temperatures drop and cloud cover increases, moisture remains trapped in the ridges
• Lower temperatures reduce evaporation
• The stored moisture continues feeding the crop while tubers develop and bulk
This is why March kandolo can still perform well even as the rainy season ends.

If managed correctly, you can be harvesting around July, exactly when supply on the market starts dropping and prices begin to recover. That’s the difference between farming as a routine… and farming as a business.

Important:
If you have backup irrigation, you are not limited by the rain. You can plant throughout the year without major restrictions.
