✋ The 5 Parameters of Sign Language
Each sign in a sign language is made up of five key components. Changing any one of them can completely change the meaning of the sign—just like changing a word in a sentence!

1️⃣ *Handshape*
> 🖐️ What shape is your hand making?
- Examples: closed fist, open palm, specific finger positions
- Think of it as the “letter” your hand is forming

2️⃣ *Location*
> 📍 Where is the sign made?
- Near the head, chest, shoulder, or in neutral space
- The same handshape in a different location = different meaning

3️⃣ *Movement*
> ➡️ How does your hand move?
- Straight, curved, circular, or repeated motion
- Movement adds action and direction to the sign

4️⃣ *Palm Orientation*
> 🧭 Which way is your palm facing?
- Up, down, toward you, away from you
- A subtle shift in palm direction can change the sign entirely

5️⃣ *Non-Manual Signals (NMMs)*
> 😮 What is your face and body saying?
- Eyebrows, head tilts, mouth shapes, body posture
- These add emotion, grammar, and emphasis—like tone of voice in spoken language

💡 *Why It Matters*
Understanding these parameters helps us appreciate the complexity and richness of sign languages. It’s not just hand gestures—it’s a full linguistic system that deserves respect and recognition.

Inclusion Begins With Access💚🤍💙

From clinics to classrooms, workplaces to policy tables—every space must welcome and empower persons with disabilities.

📌 Healthcare Access: Every patient deserves dignity, respect, and accessible services.

📚 Education: Inclusive learning environments unlock potential and build futures.

💼 Employment: Disability is not a barrier to brilliance.

🌍 Disability & SDGs: No development goal is complete without disability inclusion.

At HAAD, we believe access isn’t a favor—it’s a right. Let’s build a Zimbabwe where every voice is heard, every barrier is broken, and every person is valued.
