It's only a matter of Controlling your portions. For a diabetic a balanced plate means everything. More veggies they slow down sugar absorption thereby preventing spikes. Less carbs for they cause high blood sugar (try whole grain carbs) and enough protein thus beans, meat, fish it helps with weight...

Tips on eating well during holidays

1. Don't skip meals - skipping meals will lead to over indulging later and the increase of your blood sugar.

2. Select one thing to indulge in - for example if there cakes, sweets, drinks etc. Just choose one thing to indulge in. If you choose the drinks it means you do not eat the cake, rice, etc. If you choose to eat the cake... Leave everything else out.

3. Fill your plate with vegetables. Eat a lot of vegetables first before you get to the chips, rice, Sadza.

4. Drink lots of water throughout the day.

5. Be active - Do the dishes. Take care of the small children. Play games, take a walk.

6. Plan ahead - if you know that where you are going there are no vegetables, carry a salad or your own snacks.
