Hello Lovelies 🌸I created this blog to keep friends, family and well wishers in the loop on my cancer journey. I can't promise it will be brilliant or hilarious but hopefully it inspires people to do

Many women aren't told that Ovarian cancer is Not detected by a Pap smear or a blood test - please insist on a pelvic scan along with your Pap, HPV status, mammogram or breast scan. In memory of our very special Jeanie Bell and in honour of my very special friend Kelly Coventry who is saving lives through her Cervical Cancer Awareness campaign πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸŒ»πŸŒ»πŸŒ»

Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women, but it is preventable and curable when discovered early.

Cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Almost all sexually active people will be infected at some point in their lives, usually without symptoms.

⚠️ In most cases, the immune system clears HPV from the body. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV can cause abnormal cells to develop. Typically, it takes 15–20 years for abnormal cells to become cancer.

Risk factors for cancer progression include:

➑️ The type of HPV a person has
➑️ Immune status
➑️ The presence of other sexually transmitted infections
➑️ Number of births
➑️ Young age at first pregnancy
➑️ Hormonal contraceptive use
➑️ Smoking

The good news is that cervical cancer is preventable and can be cured if diagnosed early.

Here are three steps to protect yourself from cervical cancer:

βœ… Being vaccinated at age 9–14 years
βœ… Screening from the age of 30
βœ… Prompt quality treatment can cure cervical cancer

Doing anything for the first time is always daunting and often the biggest hurdle is the first one!

So we are going to help you take this one step at a time:

1. Book a Pap smear AND HPV testing with your medical practitioner. This is ONE procedure and done simultaneously. A Pap smear on its own is not sufficient, please insist on Both.

This will involve your doctor or a nurse taking a sample of cells from the cervix.

We know this may make you feel apprehensive, self-conscious, or scared but try to remind yourself that it’s a quick procedure that is a little uncomfortable and awkward, but it should Not be painful.

It just takes couple of minutes so shut your eyes, take deep slow breaths and try to relax – it will be over before you know it!

Why both?
The Pap smear test is used to look for abnormal cells in the cervix, while the cervical screening test looks for HPV infection.

Don't panic if your HPV test is positive - HPV itself Does Not automatically equal cancer. It is a however a risk factor that may need further investigation. More on this coming up soon... πŸ“

Anyone who is sexually active should have this done - you will now have a baseline to work with, which will dictate how often you need to go back for a check-up.

'KelLee' tip 😘: turn it into a Lady Date - book an appointment with your friend, your mum, your sister - be proud of yourselves and celebrate a huge achievement accomplished together.

Welcome, thank you and well done for joining this proactive journey with us πŸ’œπŸŒ»πŸ’œπŸŒ»

We all deserve to be the best version of ourselves and take care of our women's health, but where do we start? πŸ€”πŸ§

Here is the very bare minimum Check-Up list to start off with.

These tests and screenings can be daunting and tempting to 'put off till later,' so we are going to walk you through each one over the next several posts.

We will help to answer any questions, ease any concerns you may have and give you some handy tips to make the process as stress free as possible.

Please, always remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question - both Kelly and I are constantly learning new things about our lady bits and asking each other, "Why the heck didn't we know that??"πŸ€“πŸ«£

Asking = Awareness βœ…οΈ
Awareness = Action βœ…οΈ
Action = Advocacy βœ…οΈ

All wrapped up to improve Wellness For Women 🎁 πŸ’

'KelLee Tip πŸ€“: Create your own circle of Wellness Warriors, invite your family & and friends, and embark on this journey together, surrounded with love and support.

This is Kelly 🌻🌻, from Vic Falls, Zimbabwe πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡Ό

A mother, daughter, sister, wife, and everyone’s friend.

On October 10th, 2023, Kelly was diagnosed with stage 3Cb cervical cancer. After enduring two rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and brachytherapy and exhausting her private insurance, only to learn that her cancer was treatment-resistant and the tumor had doubled in size.

A doctor said that her last chance was immunotherapy (Keytruda), and if there was no response, worst case scenario, she had just weeks left to live. The family managed to source the first dose of immunotherapy at a very high cost, and by some miracle, Kelly sprang back to life. The immunotherapy works, and Kelly is improving every day.

The cost of this medicine is over $4,000 every three weeks for two years.

Hence:
1. Her dad, Leon, has taken on the massive challenge to walk the Pacific Crest Trail to raise funds for her treatment and raise awareness for all who are affected by this devastating disease.

2. Kelly has started this page to share her story, raise awareness and advocate for accessible screening and treatment in Africa.
