🌸 Seasonal Allergies in Children: What Parents Need to Know 🌸

Spring is beautiful, but it can also bring seasonal allergies that affect many children. 🤧 Common symptoms include sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and congestion. Here are some tips to help manage your child’s allergies:

Identify Triggers: Pollen from trees, grass, and weeds are common culprits. Keep track of when symptoms occur to identify specific triggers.

Limit Exposure: Keep windows closed during high pollen days, and use air conditioning when possible. After playing outside, have your child shower and change clothes to remove pollen.

Medication: Over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal sprays can be effective. Consult your pediatrician before starting any medication.

Stay Informed: Check daily pollen counts and plan outdoor activities when pollen levels are lower.

If your child struggles with persistent allergy symptoms, schedule a visit with us for a personalized management plan. 🌟

🌸 Happy first day of Spring! ☀️

Guess what? Spring is finally here! It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Wake up, world!” Everything feels so alive and colorful again, and it’s awesome!

You know what’s cool about spring? The sun is back, shining brighter and longer. That means we get to spend more time outside, playing, laughing, and having fun. The sun gives us something super important called vitamin D, which helps keep us healthy and strong. Every food in the photo above has something in common: they all provide Vitamin D! Meaning sunshine, heathy fish, milk, and mushrooms can all help you replenish your vitamins after a long dark winter.

So, let’s grab our bikes or even a cozy blanket, and head outside to enjoy the sunshine. Whether we’re having a barbecue with our friends or just taking a walk, let’s soak up all that sunshine and happiness that spring has to offer!

Here’s to making the most of springtime and all the fun adventures it brings our way! 🌼🌞

Did you know? At CHC, you can address the underlying hormonal aspects of PCOS while exploring hair removal options at our T and T MedSpa located in-house for your convenience!

Laser hair removal offers an effective solution for individuals dealing with unwanted hair, especially those with conditions like PCOS (Polycystic O***y Syndrome).

PCOS is a hormonal disorder affecting people with ovaries, often leading to irregular periods and elevated androgen levels. Excess hair growth, a common symptom of PCOS, can be a source of distress.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicles with concentrated light, damaging them and inhibiting future growth. While it doesn’t cure PCOS, it provides a long-term solution for managing excessive hair growth, boosting confidence and comfort. We hope you learned something helpful - wishing you a healthy and positive week ahead! 🌞❤️

See you soon @ CHC & TandT Med Spa!

SPOOKY SMILES! 🍭🍬🍫🪥🦷

Dental care for kids is essential for their overall health and well-being. By establishing good oral hygiene habits early, you set your child on the path to a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here are some tips on how to approach dental care for your kids:

Start Early: Begin dental care as soon as your child's first tooth appears, usually around six months of age. Wipe their gums with a clean, damp cloth or use a soft baby toothbrush.

Use the Right Toothpaste: When their first teeth come in, use a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. As they grow, switch to a pea-sized amount. Encourage them to spit, not swallow, the toothpaste.

Teach Proper Brushing: Show your child how to brush their teeth properly, using gentle circular motions. Make it a fun and interactive activity, so they look forward to it.

Regular Dental Checkups: Schedule your child's first dental appointment by their first birthday. Regular checkups every six months help detect and prevent dental issues early.

Balanced Diet: A nutritious diet not only supports overall health but also helps maintain healthy teeth. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay.

Flossing: Introduce flossing as soon as your child's teeth start to touch. Flossing removes plaque and debris from between teeth.

Mouthguards: If your child plays sports, ensure they wear a mouthguard to protect their teeth from injury.

Lead by Example: Kids copy their parents' behaviors. Show them your dedication to good oral hygiene through your own routine.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 🎃🦷

Hey there, students and parents ! As you gear up to head back to school, it's important to be aware of a tiny nuisance that sometimes likes to tag along - head lice. These tiny critters can make your scalp itch like crazy, but don't worry! We've got the lowdown on spotting the symptoms and how to deal with them.
Symptoms of Head Lice:
* Itchy Scalp: The most common sign! If your head feels itchy, especially around the neck and ears, lice might be the culprits.
* Tiny Bugs: Lice are tiny, but you can sometimes spot them crawling on your scalp or in your hair.
* Nits: These are lice eggs and look like tiny, oval-shaped specks attached to your hair shafts, close to the scalp.
* Red Bumps: Scratching can cause red bumps and sores on your scalp.
Treatment:
* Yoi can use special lice-killing shampoo to get rid of those pests. Follow the instructions carefully.
* Combing: You need to use a fine-toothed comb to remove the dead lice and nits from your hair.
* Wash Bedding and Clothes: To prevent re-infestation, wash and dry all your bedding, hats, and clothes in hot water.
* Notify School: It's important to let your school know so they can check other students and prevent the spread.
Remember, lice are annoying but treatable! With a bit of patience and the right treatment, you'll be back to focusing on your studies and enjoying school in no time. So don't let those tiny bugs bug you! 🐜👋😊

Sincerely,
CHC

At Children's Healthcare Center, we understand the importance of documenting the growth of your newborn. We offer a special booklet that helps parents track their baby's growth and development during the first year of life. This booklet includes charts for tracking height, weight, head circumference, and developmental milestones, as well as tips and resources for promoting your baby's health and wellbeing.

Our healthcare providers will work closely with parents to ensure that they understand how to use the booklet and accurately record their baby's growth. Regular check-ups with our healthcare team provide an opportunity to review the information in the booklet, discuss any concerns or questions, and make any necessary adjustments to the baby's care plan.

By using this booklet, parents can have a comprehensive record of their baby's growth and development, which can be useful for future healthcare visits and to monitor overall progress. It also provides a way for parents to stay informed and involved in their baby's health and wellbeing during this important stage of life.

Please check our website to see more of our newborn baby resources as well! https://childrenshcmd.com/Resources/Medical-Library/Newborns

"When Michael Jordan did not make his Varsity basketball team, his Mother did NOT: 1) complain to the school, 2) call the Coach, 3) demand a meeting with the AD, 4) transfer schools, 5) suggest MJ "take a year off" from the JV basketball team.
She simply told Michael, 'get in the gym and work harder'.
Now he's the greatest basketball player of all time. 🐐
Imagine what kids, and the world, would become if more parents were like Deloris Jordan, rather than making excuses and complaining under the guise of 'just being their kid's advocate."

Be an advocate for your athlete but let them also be their own advocate with their work. When things aren't going your way... first look for what you can do to change it.

02/06/2023

Happy Monday all! We hope winter is treating you well ❄️ One thing winter tends to bring is more dry skin. This is because the lack of humidity and cold temperatures outside your body cause the water to evaporate from behind your skin’s protective barriers more easily. Dry skin can come with itchiness, redness, cracked skin, sores, and general discomfort. Not fun at all! The good news is that CHC knows some tips and tricks to help you retain moisture during these cold and dry months:

1. Use moisturizer after your shower/bath. Applying lotion or cream after being wet will help lock in the moisture. Also reapply lotion after washing your hands!
2. The thicker the cream, the better. Especially if you have very dry skin, you’ll want to use cream from a jar that holds its shape when you move the container. Thinner lotions and oils may not be as effective.
3. Look for ingredients like urea, ceramides, hyaluronic acid and ammonium lactate. Popular brands may look good, but make sure they have the right ingredients before buying!
4. Limit contact with dish soap and harsh hand soaps. They are formulated to strip oils and grease and will do the same thing to your hands. Try dish gloves when washing dishes and hand soaps marked “gentle” or “with oils” when washing your hands
5. Avoid long hot showers. Even though it feels comforting, long showers with high heat can dry your skin out even more than a shorter cooler shower.
6. Stay hydrated!

We hope this helps. As always, if you have any concerns about your child’s skin feel free to call us at (301) 374-2666 for more information.

Yours,
The team at CHC

Tyre D. Nichols was a young man brutally beaten by police last month. He was an aspiring photographer, a beloved son to his mother, and a father himself. He battled Crohn’s disease, and at the time of his death, he weighed only 150 lbs with a height of 6’3”. In contrast, the combined weight of the 5 officers who beat him to death at a routine traffic stop was up to 1000 lbs. Tyre was unjustly and unethically overpowered then killed for something that should have led to a traffic ticket at most.

This Black History Month begins on a somber and frustrating note for many of us, as we remember not only the tragic death of Mr. Nichols, but of so many other beautiful Black souls that have departed this Earth due to unnecessary violence.

At CHC, we would like to invite you to spread the love you can while you can. Share the joy you can while you can. Embrace others. Teach grace and kindness. STAND up for what you believe in and impart strong values on the next generation. SPEAK up against bullying against you or around you. Our children are the future, and we have to keep them safe.

And we will. We shall overcome. Please take care and have a happy and safe Black History Month!

Yours,
The team at CHC

Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter is here and all we want to do is snuggle back under the covers for a few more minutes of comfort in the morning. CHC would like to give you a friendly reminder that even though it’s dark and cold this time of year, frequent moderate exercise can brighten it back up!

Exercise is anything physical that gets your heart rate up - this includes brisk walking, running, sports, climbing, playing, skating, biking, etc. Kids (and their parents) should be engaging in frequent exercise to keep their brains, bodies, and bones healthy.

Kids age 3-5 should be active throughout the day.

Kids age 6-17 should be getting at least 1 hour of exercise a day.

Young adults and adults should aim for at least 5 hours of exercise per week.

P.S. A few minutes of stretching after waking up can loosen tight muscles, improve athletic performance, strengthen your joints, and give you more energy than a coffee!

If you have any questions about how to exercise more, eat healthy, or manage your weight, please call us at (301) 374-2666!

Yours,
The CHC Team

Good morning, have you made an appointment for your child’s yearly physical yet? Staying healthy is one of our New Year's Resolutions! If you missed preventative care over the last couple years, the CDC recommends that kids get back on track with well-visits with their pediatrician as soon as possible. If you've been on top of it - welcome back!

Well-visits are important for tracking your child’s growth and developmental milestones. They also give both you and your child a chance to discuss any health concerns you may have. We look forward to providing comprehensive pediatric care for your family.

See you soon!

Although children are less likely than adults to suffer severe health outcomes from COVID-19, there are some conditions that they develop as a result of infection.

If your child tests positive for COVID-19, make sure you 1) watch for any lingering or new symptoms and 2) tell a healthcare provider about what you notice.

Common symptoms that can affect children after contracting COVID-19 include: breathing problems, chest pain (also called myocarditis, or heart muscle inflammation), changes to smell or taste, changes in speech or slurring, unclear or fuzzy thinking, physical or mental fatigue, headaches.

Some kids also experience long haul COVID, which is any extension of the original infection symptoms over a period of 4 or more weeks.

If you have any questions about what your child is experiencing after a positive COVID-19 test. Please don’t hesitate to contact your doctor at (301) 374-2666

Pack that back to school snack! Diet has a profound effect on both body and brain health. Even so, children and teens do not follow the dietary recommendations for healthy eating! A healthy diet can
1. Keep stress manageable
2. Promote better academic performance
3. Support healthy muscles and bones for sports and exercise
4. Prevent illnesses like Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and nutritional deficiency.

What are some nutrients that all kids should be getting completely?

1. Protein (Muscles and energy! Vegan children are at risk for deficiency.)
2. Iron (Growth, blood health! Most common nutrient deficiency)
3. Vitamin D (Strong bones!)
4. Calcium (Strong bones and healthy hormones!)
5. Omega-3 fatty acids (Healthy brain and skin!)

Check out the slides above to learn more about what foods your child can eat to fulfill their nutrition needs.
