From enduring chronic pain for the majority of his life to now planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this winter, Jimi Olaghere’s extraordinary story epitomises the value of hope, determination, and the incredible potential of precision medicine.

For more than three decades, Jimi battled the effects of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder characterised by severe anaemia and debilitating pain. His symptoms were so extreme at times that they led to multiple ICU admissions and a heart attack in his twenties.

Today, Jimi is free from sickle cell disease thanks to a landmark trial between Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics. As one of 31 participants, Jimi underwent a remarkable gene therapy that effectively edited his gene for sickle cell, rendering it dysfunctional.

We are incredibly excited to announce that Jimi will be making his debut appearance in the Middle East and North Africa in Dubai this May at the PrecisionMed Exhibition & Summit (PMES) UAE. Don’t miss his awe-inspiring story as he shares his journey so far and how he is now training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this September to raise awareness and funds for others affected by the condition.

Launching during PrecisionMed Exhibition & Summit (PMES) 2024, the Precision GenQuest competition is dedicated to PhD students and young scientists, inviting them to present their research at the MENA region’s only dedicated event for personalised healthcare.

The competition will reflect the themes of this year’s PMES main stage which are: Healthy Populations, Lifestyle Intervention and Disease Prevention, Clinical Genomics, and AI in precision medicine.
