In times of uncertainty, many people notice changes in their sleep, like lighter sleep, frequent waking, or feeling “on edge” at night.

When the brain perceives threat, it prioritizes staying alert over resting.

If sleep has felt different lately, you’re not alone. Small steps that help the body feel safer can gradually support better rest.

Be gentle with yourself during stressful times. Your nervous system is doing its best to adapt.

This past week has been unlike any other.

Between the sound of interceptions overhead and the uncertainty of regional conflict, our team have been:

- holding clinical sessions and supporting clients
- caring for babies and children at home
- coping alone, with husbands trapped overseas
- moving house
- comforting stressed family members
- staying up all night with distressed children and pets
- offering free supports online
- adapting to each day, as it unfolds
- maintaining a solid sense of humour and positivity

Ongoing news about conflict can be deeply distressing, especially for those who have previously experienced war, displacement, or violence.

Trauma doesn’t always stay in the past. For many people, current events can reactivate memories, fear, and a sense of danger, even when they are physically safe.

If you notice your body reacting strongly to news about conflict, remember: these responses are not a sign of weakness; they are the nervous system trying to protect you.

Thank you to all who attended Lucy’s Grounding and Relaxation webinars on Tuesday and Wednesday.

During the webinar, Lucy guided a grounding and relaxation exercise. This is something you can practice at home whenever you need it.

Even a few minutes of slowing the breath and bringing your attention back to the present moment can help the body begin to settle.

It is natural that they may have questions and concerns as they try to make sense of what is happening around them, but as parents, our responsibility in how we navigate difficult conversations sensitively is important.

Honest, calm, age-appropriate discussions where there feelings are heard and validated help children feel safe and emotionally supported.
