Baths and bathing culture
The history of olive oil mirrors the history of human civilization. The olive tree was considered from ancient times sacred and blessed. From the olive tree our ancestors made vegetable essence: olive oil. From olive oil they created pure soap in honor of the Sun and human beauty. Water is a philosophy, a culture and the one essential to all life. What is water for us? It is the concern for cleanliness,a bathing culture inherited from the Romans. The Turkish bath, known simply as hamam, is a traditional cleansing treatment offered across the Middle East and in variations around the globe.
Baths were common throughout the Roman Empire in a geographic range stretching from Europe to North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Baths are much more than just a place to cleanse the skin. It was intimately bound up with everyday life, a place where people of every rank and station, young and old, rich and poor, townsman or villager, could come freely. Naturally, there was a one important item associated with a hamam visit, and that is OLIVE OIL SOAP.
With our SOAPS we are continuing the traditions of our ancestors, making OLIVE OIL SOAP to cleanse, to nourish, to moisturize, to make your skin gentle.

Traditional Soaps (Heritage soaps) of Arabia
The earliest recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon. A formula for soap consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil was written on a Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC
The Arabs made soap from vegetable oil such as olive oil and some aromatic oils such as thyme oil. Lye (Al-Soda Al-Kawia) was used for the first time, and the formula hasn't changed from the current soap sold in the market.
Tradition of making soap is based primarily on the growth of olive trees. Whether on the coast or in the hinterland, the centers of soap are all former olives press centers. Soap is primarily a domestic production of the villages, where they used the remains of the oil production.
From the beginning of the 7th century, soap was produced in Nablus (Palestine), Kufa and Basra (Iraq). Soap, as we know them today, are descendants of historical Arabian Soap.
Soaps made from vegetable oils (such as olive oil), aromatic oils (such as thyme oil) and lye (al-soda al-Kawia) were first produced by a chemist in the beginning of the 7 century in Nablus (West Bank), Kufa and Basra (Iraq).
The soap was perfumed and colored. They also had special soap for shaving. It was sold for 3 Dirhams (0.3 Dinars) a piece in 981 AD.
When it came to clean their bodies, they are said to have used the Luffa - a long and narrow vegetable that belongs to the cucumber family, which eventually led to the production of modern-day synthetic sponges.
Arabs use Olive oil Soap and Luffah Soap to maintain personal hygiene in the past and now.

Benefits of Olive oil soap

The olive tree was considered from ancient times sacred and blessed. It sprouted and thrived in every part of Greece, owing to the sunny climate of the country.

Knowing from tradition that the main raw material in the production of soap is the oleaginous stuff, Greeks came to use the most widespread and abundant vegetable essence in their country which was olive oil. In this way the pure soap from olive oil was born. From olive oil they created pure soap in honor of the Sun and human beauty.

Thus every Greek household manufactured its own homemade olive oil soap; to cleanse, to nourish, to moisturize, and to make your skin gentle.
From Greece, the production of this type of soap was extended to the whole Mediterranean area. The history of olive oil mirrors the history of human civilization.

Olive oil soap in English speaking countries is also call “Castile soap”
because of a similar olive oil based soap made in the Castile region of Spain.

The roots of soap manufacturing can be traced back to Ancient Greece in the Aegean island of Le**os. On this island, animal sacrifices took place in honor of the Gods.

The animals were incinerated and ashes from hardwoods were collected and mixed with the remainder of the sacrificed animals.
After a heavy rain, a yellow residue from the pile of ashes started rolling down the hill - where the Temple was found - and ended up in a nearby river. The local women while washing their clothes in the river observed that their clothes became cleaner when the waters of the river had a yellowish color.

History records that the poetess Sappho mentioned in her writings the action of this yellowish liquid. In order to honor her, the Greeks, invented the term "Saponification", which stems from the name of the poetess. This is also the chemical term which describes the chemical reaction of lye (sodium hydroxide) and water with fats or oils. That chemical reaction results in the conversion of fats or oils into Soap!

PAN Soaps continues this ancient tradition, and manufactures olive soap from the best quality olive oil.
PAN Soaps are of excellent quality and consist of 100% pure materials without artificial colors and chemical additives.

If you want to enjoy REAL OLIVE SOAP and follow our ancestor’s footsteps, PAN OLIVE OIL SOAP is the real thing for you.

Why use olive oil in soap?

The nourishing benefits of using olive oil as a food are well known but what it is that it is beneficial to the skin.

Olive oil soap moisturizes the skin without interfering with the natural skin function. It attracts and holds moisture close to the skin. Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and is porous. Some commercial soaps are basically detergents, and full of chemicals which is rubbed onto the skin. No wonder there are so many people with skin problems.
Pure olive oil soap is gentle, cleanses the skin and moisturizes it leaving it feeling nourished.

Pure olive oil soap also has a lower pH than most commercial soaps making it suitable for people with very sensitive or dry skins.

The soap has different properties depending on the type of fat or oil used. Many are drying and irritate the skin. Pure olive oil soap not only gently cleans but it also moisturizes, nourishes and improves resilience of the skin.

We are using a traditional cold process method to make olive oil soap. This results in the natural glycerin and other beneficial properties being retained in the soap. Our Olive oil soap is then cured over a six week period before it is available to market. The process is labor intensive but produces a very superior product.
