A Pillar of Airway Science — Remembering Dr. Seshagiri Rao Mallampati
The world of anaesthesia bids farewell to one of its most influential minds, Dr. Seshagiri Rao Mallampati, MD — a clinician whose contribution reshaped airway evaluation globally.
In an era when airway assessment lacked structured simplicity, Dr. Mallampati introduced a classification system that was both intuitive and transformative. The Mallampati classification became more than a scoring method; it became a universal language spoken in operating rooms, ICUs, and training programs worldwide — strengthening anticipation, preparation, and patient safety.
From humble beginnings in Patchalatadiparru, Andhra Pradesh, to earning international respect, his career reflected intellectual rigor, academic excellence, and deep commitment to advancing medical practice. As a proud graduate of Andhra Medical College (Class of 1963), he carried his roots with distinction while influencing anaesthesia practice across generations and geographies.
Few innovations in medicine achieve such permanence that they are woven seamlessly into daily clinical thought. His did.
Every pre-operative airway assessment bears his imprint.
Every carefully planned intubation echoes his foresight.
His work continues — in textbooks, in teaching rounds, and in the quiet confidence of clinicians who benefit from his insight.
May his soul rest in peace.
Om Shanti.
